Desert/nighttime shooting

I should be the last person here asking for advice about desert shooting, but a much-postponed nighttime shoot up in the mountains here looks to be going ahead this weekend coming.

The plan calls for light painting and star trails and we have a few locations picked out. Anyone care to venture advice as I'm rusty?

    Tripod'll be handy :p

    Joking, joking.

Any photography in the desert at night just brings me back to www.lostamerica.com

I should be getting commission the amount of times I've sent on his site...

There's a site linked from the one above, The Nocturnes that has a huge number of hints and tips on night photography....looks interesting.
