hi guys. just wondering if anyone has any opinions on the giant scr range? i'm thinking of going for on and am not sure what one to go for. torn between the scr 2 3 and 4, the main thing being price and what i really get for the difference in the price i pay for each one. has anyone tried any of the 2008 range?

As always you will get more the more you pay.

The main differences are (prices are from CSS):

    SCR4 (€539): steel fork, 2200 8sp gears, double chainset
SCR3 (€749): carbon fork, Sora 8sp gears (with Tiagra RD), triple chainset
SCR2 (€889): carbon fork, Tiagra 9sp gears (Tiagra is a step up from Sora and the levers have a better shifting mechanism.), triple chainset

Finishing kit and wheels seem the same across the range.

Are the upgrades worth it? It is a big jump up from the 4; carbon fork and Sora/Tiagra rather than 2200 probably is worth extra but €210 is a fair difference, it all depends on how much you want to pay. Important too to get the gearing you need if you are going to be cycling it up hills.

I have the '08 SCR-4 (my first roadbike) and have been very happy with it, although i got dropped a bit on my first attempt serious hills at the weekend. not sure if it was down to gearing or being too used to the nice flatlands of the lee valley. i made my buddies suffer on the flat when i caught up though:D.

If you are small, I just put one up for sale on the club website earlier on (size 47 small). Few other bits here too......

I have a Giant SCR 2 2007 model and it's a very nice bike for the money. I bought it in December but only got to use it much recently due to surgery so it's barely been broken in but I've really enjoyed every cycle on it and I feel I get good speed out of it. I do notice the carbon forks give a smoother ride. I'm not sure how it compares to other bikes in that price bracket in terms of weight, but to me I'm surprised when I pick it up at how light it is.

I've actually been looking for an excuse to sell it as I've been itching to buy a Focus Cayo which is in the next price bracket up but is great value, but to be honest, I can't justify that purchase as the SCR 2 is a clear step up from any bike I've had previously and more than meets my needs. That said, bonus time is coming up soon in work... :D

Suppose I should post since I own a ‘08 SCR 3, though unlike the rest of you I’m not selling mine! I got mine for €729 from the local bike shop.
I don’t know a lot about road bikes, this is my first one, but I enjoy every ride I’ve been on. My research suggested that Giant bikes are good value for money compared to their competitors’ equivalent models.
The thumb shifters are a bit annoying if you’re on the drops. I actually don’t know if the other models are like this. The shifting is fast and smooth 99% of the time. It feels light. I imagine it has the full range of gears that you might need, though I haven’t fully tested that.
Not sure what else to say. Remember you’ll have to buy extra stuff as well. Try them all out, but remember your local bike salesman is probably on commission and is really gonna try to sell the SCR2.

SCR 4 and SCR 3 have thumb shifters (2200 and Sora), SCR 2 (Tiagra) has the lever that extends down and which most people find easier to shift in the drops.

I find the thumb shifts on my SCR4 fine at the moment, but I'm wondering how they'll feel with freezing finger's in the winter as they're pretty small.

Other than that I'm not really qualified to give an opinion on the bike as I only have mine 3 weeks and have not attempted anything too adventurous yet (I did a 25km spin yesterday which is great for me!). Although I'm planning on hitting Howth head either later today or the weekend.

But failure will, I suspect, be more attributable to me than the bike.

I looked at the SCR range last year while buying my bike, and felt the Specialized allez at the same price seemed to be alot more for the money.

A friend bought the SCR4, and it feels like a brick compared to the Allez.

So I guess what I am saying is the SCR3 is alot better than the SCR4 but the Allez is a better bike (frame at least) in my (limited) opinion.

You have to compare like with like though and the fact is that Specialized doesn't have anything anywhere near the SCR4 in price. The steel fork on the SCR4 is going to increase the weight compared with the carbon on the Allez and SCR3/2.

From what I can make out on the Cycleways site the Allez is €750 (double) or €850 (triple) which means it is competing with the SCR3 or SCR2, not the 4. The spec of the Allez double is pretty comparable with the SCR3 (Sora levers), and the spec of the triple pretty comparable with the SCR2 (Tiagra levers.) So if you are considering paying that sort of money the Allez is certainly worth considering (I'd also consider alternatives like the Trek 1.2 in that price range although the spec (2200) is lower for €750.)

I've got a SCR 4 which I got for €450 on wiggle. I like the bike alot tho' wish that I'd stretched the extra €100 or so at the time for the SCR 3 to get the triple and better bits (they were both on sale last autumn when I was buying).

Your right of course, sorry I forgot to point out though I got mine for €660 and my mate paid €550 for his SC4 - which makes mine a serious deal.

I'll sell it for €450 btw, and its the 08 model in good nick!

I've a woman's SCR3 and I really love it. Cycle super store offer a corporate discount on their bikes so find someone who has that discount.

Other bike shops will match the discount.

When I was hunting around for bikes a few months back, I found that none of other big manufacturers had anything comparable to the SCR4. The lowest Trek, Speciallized were more in line with the SCR3.

I finally went with a Lemond Etape 2007 model which is pretty much a rebagded Trek 1000 (Sora/Tiagra) and got it for 600 euro. I am pretty sure the shop still has a few 2007 lemond's in stock. So PM me if you want the details.

Else, wheelworx have a 2007 SCR2 on sale for 750 euro

The Lemond Etape was actually downgraded in 2008 (from 2200/Sora/Tiagra to 2200/2200/Sora) so if you can pick up the 2007 for €600 it's a bargain. Note the Trek 1.2 is 2200/2200/Sora so the 2007 Etape is slightly above that.

I have always thought the paint jobs on Lemond bikes looked very nice, and it is something a bit different. short_circuit's bike is a particularly nice chrome colour with yellow decals, looks very good.

Carbon fork and seatpost too, for €600 there is nothing near it TBH.

That's a very good offer for a good condition 08 Allez, I think I've seen your bike too and looks very good- it's black, right? What size is it?

I am more than happy with my SCR 2.0 but wouldn't have much to compare it to. Also tried old second hand Allez Specialised - good but preferred the Giant. I also put on Mavic Cosmic Elite wheels. Carbon forks help a lot to dampen vibrations and you don't get these with the SCR 4.0. A lot depends on budget and the use you intend to get from the bike. Only you can weigh that up - but I would say you get what you pay for as stated earlier.

+1 - I think that brookes saddle you use blorg would top it off fantastic - real old skool !

thanks blorg - yea - the one I was riding on Sunday morning, it's a 56

I am hell bent on buying a carbon bike for some reason - better Fred than dead ! :D

if you thinking of getting the SCR4 have a look at the beone Briza on chainreactioncycles. I got one instead of the giant, its doing me fine and am very happy with it. about €200 cheaper.

I've an SCR 2.0 - my first road bike - and am very happy with it so far. Reviews in 22o Triathlon Magazine were very positive which swayed me from getting a 3.0 and paying the extra for the 2.0

ive got an scr 3 and ive no complaints. use it for commuting training and sportives.
Do about 300km per week and have had no problems with it.

My last (and first) roadbike was an 07 Giant SCR 2.0. I'm 5'10" on a good day and my helpful friends at the UCD bike shop gave me a large frame. Fine for commuting because it was nice and upright, ut not so good on the longer spins.

Anyway, i really loved it and probably would have kept it if I had got a medium. You get a very solid aluminium frame for starters. Components wouldn't worry me too much, as you can upgrade to your hearts content and unless you are a top rider, you wont see that much difference between a well maintained tiagra/105/ultegra in my opinion. I would suggest that whichever SCR you go for (and I would get the carbon fork for a smoother ride) be sure and upgrade the wheels as the standard alex rims are woeful. They are heavy and buckle pretty easy.

Get what you can afford, they are all the same frame and its a good, solid frame to start with.
