Am in process of buying laptop for use at my son's chess tournaments. Some of them are in Europe and may be in places that don't have broadband or even internet connections.

Is there anything I can do or purchase to be able to get online in these circumstances? If I want to get on-line in general while away what do I need?

    Thanks!

You might want to look at mobile broadband. I know that O2 do this, and I'm sure that there are other providers around too.

Basically you plug a modem/card into your USB port, and it connects your computer to a satellite millions of miles up in the sky.

    Can be quite pricey though.

Thanks. Have been talking to Dell and they said 127 euro for it. Out of my budget at the moment but may be worth it in the long run.

Be very, very careful when using these devices - they will cost you an arm and a leg when used abroad. I'm talking in the order of a couple of hundred Euro. See the Mobiles/PDA forum for a few horror stories.

Vodafone's 3G card costs something in the order of €12 per day when used abroad, and that's only when you switch it on - they'll then charge you for data on top of that.
