This is just out of curiosity, but lately I have been wondering how much faster men are than women in 5K or 10K races. For example, if I run 5k in 24 minutes, how much faster will men of an equivalent standard to me do it in? As a woman, it's easy to feel that loads of people are doing better than you in a race and sometimes I forget that men are going to be naturally faster!

If you ran 24mins on the track you would earn 353pts on the IAAF Scoring Charts which in fact equates to a 18:03 for a man doing a 5k on the track, so good work!!! It also equates to a woman running a 17.17 100m or throwing a javelin 22.32m. There you go, bet you didn't know that. IAAF scoring charts are the business.

Whereabouts can one look up these charts? It'd be interesting to see how my 5k time would equate to 1 mile, 10k etc.

a quick calculator that is based on the charts is available here:

    http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/mcmillanrunningcalculator.htm

It predicts the times you should be able to run at other distances based on a recent time at a certain distance. It of course assumes you do the correct training to support your predicted time.
