Children’s Penalty Shoot Out with Niall Quinn and Dublin Bus

Dublin Bus and Chairman of Sunderland F.C. and former Irish Soccer International, Niall Quinn, on Wednesday 9th July 2008 held a penalty shoot out competition for over 100 children, from the Tallaght area, aged from 8 – 14 years. The event is the highlight of a series of local community summer projects run by the Summer Projects of Brookfield, Jobstown and Fettercairn and took place at St. Thomas’ S.N.S, Jobstown.

Dublin Bus organised the event in conjunction with these projects and An Garda Síochána and aims to provide the youths with a sense of community and to promote a respect for public transport.

The 16 winners of the competition received a special coaching session from Niall Quinn and prizes from Dublin Bus. Speaking at the event, Dublin Bus Chief Executive, Joe Meagher, said, “Although Dublin Bus’ main duty is to provide public transport, we are also committed to playing our part in the communities we serve,” he said.

By organising the event, Dublin Bus aims to recognise the great work being done voluntarily by its staff, community Gardaí and the Summer Project groups. Also, events like the penalty shoot out allow Dublin Bus to get to know some of its younger customers and impress upon them the importance of the role of the bus in the community.

Niall Quinn, who is also the patron of the Dublin Bus Community Support Programme outlined his support for the shoot out, “I’m delighted that I could make it here today, these kids have such enthusiasm for football and I hope that they get something out of today. It’s really important that children are listened to and that they learn the life skills they need to reach their full potential.”
