Sony Vaio Blu-Ray Copy Protection Problem

    Hi,

My parents bought a Sony Vaio laptop last week. One of the selling points of this machine is that it has a Blu-Ray player with HDMI out. When I tried hooking up a HDMI cable to their flatscreen HD ready TV to see if we could watch a Blu-Ray movie on the TV I ran into problems.

I put a Blu-Ray disc into the laptop (Ratatouille which I recently bought for my PS3). The Blu-Ray player software automatically started on the laptop and then a message came up saying "this disc cannot be played due to copy protection".

I searched and searched through the help files on the computer (which was incredibly frustrating because I don't know how to use Vista) and I couldn't find any answers. Eventually I went online and found a few threads which seemed to say that due to copy protection some Blu-Ray discs won't play on a laptop when a HDMI cable is detected.

I disconnected the HDMI cable and sure enough the Ratatouille disc played fine on the laptop. So it seems not to be possible to play certain Blu-Ray movies through the TV.

Does anyone know a way around this? I'm not interested in illegally copying Blu-Ray movies, I just want to be able to play them on a HD TV using the best connection possible. It seems pretty incredible that they could put out a product with a technical flaw like this built into it.

My parents are pretty annoyed about it. They feel that the laptop dealer mislead them when they were making the purchase since they didn't mention this problem, and encouraged them to purchase a HDMI cable that cost €40 with the computer.

Are there any detailed articles online that deal with this problem? So far I've only been able to find brief mentions of the problem on various discussion threads.

    Thanks,
