I creeped myself out a bit yesterday.

I took a look in an old iron ore adit (horizontal mineshaft) that I found some time ago but never had the guts to go in alone. I mustered up some courage yesterday and went in about 50 yards. Very dark, very damp and drips way into the distance. I need company to go any further as I was getting creeped out. It goes in a lot further and there are multiple tunnels going down all different levels. I felt like I was in Moria.

Anyway here's the photo of the entrance. It's not a cave of course but as it is dug into the cliffs I might include it in my cave project.

Here's the small entrance. This adit is difficult to find in a very remote cove on the Causeway Headlands.

Looking at the picture of the entrance, reminds me again what hardy folk our forefathers were.

    Be careful in there Andy.

    Cabaal,

Cheers. I'm not sure how much photography we will be able to do down here. But with some light painting we might create something interesting.

Here's another from yesterday. This is the Mayor's Cave at White Rocks, Portrush. The water was so clear and inviting I was almost tempted to swim in. However, I heard some large animal growling within and it didn't sound friendly. It must have been a seal with a temper. I'll get in here with the dinghy at some stage.

wow, that almost looks tropical...don't blame you for wanting to go for a swim, although with growling I don't think I would have either.

Sure if you get somebody to come along I'm sure you could manage something with the cave and some lighting alright, given your previous work I don't doubt it tbh

where abouts are these caves ?

    Northern Ireland ?

    Jacdaw,

These caverns are all in County Antrim and are part of my onging project to photograph some of the county's most secret places. Some of these caves haven't been photographed for over 100 years. Dunkerry cave had never been photographed before as far as I am aware.

I'm a bit reluctant to give out 6 figure grid references because some of these caves are lethal due to the tides and swell. PM me if you want better directions to any of them.

Andy, I live in Letterkenny, but work away from home a few days a week.
I do a bit of hill walking, but I've never tried any cave exploration.
I've recently gotten back into photography (after 20 years!) and I'd really enjoy checking out this adit (and learning a thing or two - your photos are fantastic).
Let me know if you still want some company and I'll PM you when I'm not working (mostly Sunday, Monday & Tuesdays).

    Andy,
I'm from Antrim myself - if you want to arrange a day to do this, PM me and we can get something sorted.

MrMac, Octoberfall, Duchovny Thanks for those offers.

Mac, Octoberfall, You must get in contact with me and we'll arrange to get out. I always like to meet up with local photographers on the North coast (and visiting ones for that matter Duchovny).

Also, I'm always looking for willing suckers (volunteers) for photographic adventures in Antrim and Inishowen. I've found a few quiet places that nobody ever goes.

Tomorrow evening (Thursday) we're getting the Lidl dinghy out again to try and find the legendary and inaccessible Smugglers cave near Dunseverick. But there will be plenty of photographic opportunities for the landlubbers that we leave behind in the cove too. PM me for details.

As far as this mineshaft is concerned I am seeking advice from experienced cavers on the possibility of "bad air". I like an adventure, but I'm sensible nevertheless.
