Really fast question - (because it's late & I have to get to sleep for work in the morning) - I wanted to take the shot above but apart from setting the camera to infinity & manual, the camera couldn't focus on anything.. I presume because it was too dark? ... how should one go about getting the shot above right? Any advice? Thanks! :)

(not really c&c as such, more advice as to how to)

i'm no expert , but i usuall swivel the tripod head , and focus on something lightish , lock the focus , swivel to shot i want and fire , with the shutter speed set really low , maybe 1 sec or more .

i'm sure there is errors in my technique ;)
but it kind of works, sometimes for me.

Very steady tripod / bean bag on car roof/wall
    Cable release / self timer
Manual focus (made easier if you have Live view) maybe focus on trunk of tree in this case - bring bright torch to help focussing can help sometimes
and then mess with settings, Bulb prob best for most effects

Nice shot all the same, maybe just crop a bit of the right out

Bump the aperture up so you get a wide dof so most thing s will be sharpish attempt to focus on the water so it looks sharp along with the trees .On a tripod set your cfn to mirror lock up if you have no cable release set to self timer and shoot
Set iso to 100 and shoot raw so you have a good bit of exposure control after
