RTE in south of France

    Hi there,
can anyone help me with this please?

My Dad has a house near Carcassone/Perpignon in south of France. He wants to be abel to watch RTE / Network 2 etc there.

    I reckon 2 options but I'm wary of 1.
    1. Get Slingbox and Internet in house in France. I'm concerned about the upload bandwidth Dad has at home. I've no experience of Slingbox. Any comments on this welcome although it might be out of place here....

    2. Get a dish and a receiver.
Can anyone help me with this?
What size dish would I need to get him for there?
Do I need to get a Sky box out to him or is there an alternative?
If I need to get a sky box out to him any ideas on the best way to do that?

    Thanks

You need 512k or ideally 1M upload. Sling box is not the only solution. A PC with Unreal Server or VLC will do the same. otherwise quality is worse than YouTube.

You'd need a Sky Subscription. Try FTA box on BBC first. You'll need a big dish, but you would be in Fresnell zone for 2D, so reception could be possible on 2m or not possible on 4m as you move down the road a km or two. Non-2D Sky channels are fine :) RTE is on 2D sadly.

I don't know the likelyhood of it happening, but I read some speculation on another forum that the RTEs *could* move off 2D, to make room for more Freesat channels. *IF* they did, you probably wouldn't have any problem getting them with a reasonable-sized dish. When this *might* happen is anyones guess though.

Makes sense, since they're encrypted anyway.

Probably needs a 1.2M dish to be safe.

I wonder when RTÉ international launches soon will it be on 2D also? or a different bird in the Astra bouquet? It would be easier to receive if not on Astra 2D. RTE can be picked up all is needed is a big dish and a quality LNB and Quality Sky Box (some are better suited to viewing abroad than standard Irish ones) 2D is being got in Cyprus and Lanzarote which are a hell of a lot furthur away. Schumacher gets Astra is Brazil and will probably try LNB freezing to imrove the gain.

It's mis-named RTE International. It's an RTE-UK service thus very very likely to be on 2D, especially if it's FTA.

The size of dish is far more important than variations in Digibox and LNB. Despite persistent reports, it's the performance of LNB and tuner in presence of STRONG signals from the Eurobird and non-2D Astra when trying to tune the weak 2D transponders outside the main service area. Not at all the sensitivity, which is entirely the dish size for ANY LNB less than 1dB NF.

The Sat receiver is at "IF" so has NO impact whatsoever on weak signal sensitivity. A filter to reduce the higher frequencies on the coax cable (2D is mostly 10.xxx GHz part) will reduce the stronger signals and have x100 more effect than any choice of Digibox. Ironically a longer coax feed will do this!

Depends on Fresnel pattern and dish size. There are places in Spain that can't get it at all. Yet most of Gibraltar can receive it with a large dish.

On a very large dish the signal will rise and fall during the 24hrs as every satellite has a slight inclination, so get dish aligned at peak viewing time.

Astra in Brazil is not I think the 2D spot beam. :)

Go with a big dish as watty says if it possible. RTE is on Horizontal transponder so its weaker than vertical I (think) based on reports. Horizontal is impossible where I am, tho a bit more east of France.

I have a slingbox arrangement , quality is ropey, its ok on a laptop but forget quality images. Ok for news, thats about all. Just a useful thing to have if you can afford it and put up with youtube pictures realtime. Sound however appears to be v good quality so for radio its useful, v little compression from what I hear-

I would doubt if it will be on 2D as RTE could uplink this themselves on 2D, but have instead put out to tender uplinking from London. Being on another Astra sat would also give greater coverage in mainland Europe.

The uplink is in London because that's where it is Produced. It's RTE-UK

So does that imply they'll get a clean dog free feed from RTE in London for transmission purposes? I'd like to get my hands on that feed ;)

There is very little live RTE on it possibly. Also they do the presenting in London

Comming Soon to a Dish Near you: RTE-UK

If it's being uplinked from London then it's highly unlikely to be on 10744 because I doubt that 2D has onboard multiplexing. I suppose it could go to another 2D transponder but I'd have a feeling that Eurobird is the most likely choice.

Exactly! and why uplink to 2D from London when you are already uplinking to it from Donnybrook? As regards presentation being done in London, that would be an unnecessary cost when you have presentation facilities, and presenters in Dublin.

It could be on any 2D transponder that is already uplinked from London. Arn't C4 testing on one with null PIDs?

Because it's a UK service. I'm assured it is being presented from London. Though that could be mis-information.

I have an apartment in Cannes , with a 1m dish and have no problems with all sky channels (incl RTE etc).

I simply bring down the card from home when going on hols and all non premium channels (sky sports & movies) will work

Does card not need to be matched to box i.e. is your card not matched to your box at home rather than your box in France? Surely a card cannot be matched to more than one box or can it? Or do you bring your box with you on holidays?

The Card will work in the spare box in France for most Channels. The "wrong card for this box" message only appears on channels such as sky sports and sky movies. All other channels will appear
