HDD kaput - mounting HFS+ from another OS?

The 2.5" SATA HDD in my Macbook killed itself today - was running fine, OSX locked, rebooted verrryyy slooowlllyyy and locked again. Now won't boot.

Can't mount the HDD from Startup Disk from the installer either. Leaving the machine to cool down for the moment - this used to help with a failing IDE drive in a Vaio years back.

But anyway, does anyone know if theres any more resiliant HFS+ drivers around (Windows/Linux?) or decent data recovery tools for HFS+? Theres bog all of value on the drive, nearly everything important is on DVD or my server, but theres a few bits and pieces since my last backup...

You could try installing windows on a seperate USB drive, then use spinrite to recover your macbooks drive, apparently spinrite is the best drive recovery software but unfortunately its not available for mac

Try this first before you do anything ( might solve the problem without too much effort )

Start it up in 'single user mode' (apple & 'S' keys pressed on power up) and do a fsck ( FileSystem ChecK ). Instructions will be on the screen.

Probably wont solve the problem but is easy to do.

Recently I thought my hd was dead on a G5. It turned on but without video. I could not even get into it using firewire cable connected to another computer. As a last resort I took out the ram and put it back and my problem was sorted. Worth a try and is easily overlooked. The firewire cable to another mac computer may help recover your data.

HDD now dead to the point where its not even being recognised as present anymore - managed to pull a small amount of data off with Nucleus Kernel Recovery.

I tried a filesystem check off the install CD, first thing I attempted - the disk wasn't in good enough condition to get to single user mode. Nor is it a RAM problem, just a completely dead disk.

Second disk thats died in that chassis, at that!

If you have a PC, you can put the Macbook disk in it and Spinrite it there - Spinrite is format-agnostic, and will do as good a job with HFS systems as it will with NTFS/FAT32/ext[2-3]/whatever systems. If nothing else, it'll be able to tell you if the SMART analysis of the drive says it's dead.

You should also look at the freezing trick to see if it'll run at least briefly for you, but remember to account for condensation!!!

    Hope this helps,
    Gadget.
