I've had 2 versions of the push-pull ones (one with macro, one without macro)
both amazingly sharp and very well built and tough
there is one with AF-S, but it's hard to find
the actual AF-D on sale now has 2 rings, one for focusing and the other one for zoom

they all got replaced with the 70-200 af-s VR and it's the one I have

a good push-pull shouldn't cost you more than 400-450, a dual ring new from HK is about 700, 70-200 af-s vr goes for 1000 used or 1500+ new

it has been rumoured a new version of the 70-200 will come out in photokina in september, I doubt it but that may explain why the 70-200 is now in stock everywhere when it was out of stock for a long while up to 2 months ago

I own the current AF-D model (Nikon still make it as a much cheaper alternative to the 70-200), they can be had new in B&H for about $900 , infact I have heard that it can be preferable to use the AF-S version on the D3 (which was replaced by the 70-200 and is no longer made).

So essentially this lens is excellent, it is fairly rugged, but quite heavy, as are all lens in this class, but it is worth it for the quality, which is excellent, though I'd avoid the older push pull ones, as they have worse glass and are not as easy to use...

Definitely worth it for full frame (better than the 70-200) or if you just cant afford the 70-200...

I read some reports that, for full frame, the sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM might even be better than the AF-S VR Nikon lens as it has less corner vignetting ... but ot so sure about sharpness & of course the advantage of VR.

I bought the AF-D 80-200 used. I love it :) Its a heavy beast but once you use it you can see why it costs so much more than a 70-300 f/4+ type lens.

There were some for sale 2nd hand on adverts.ie, they may have dissappeared by now, otherwise you'll just have to do some old fashioned internet research...
