Maybe an upset or two on the cards. Limerick in with a shout v Meath?
    Monaghan to beat Derry?

Noticed another upset in the results from this weekend. Wicklow beat Westmeath in the Christy Ring. That's a great result for them.

I'd be going with Leitrim to beat Clare in the football and I am Clare man

    Longford v Laois

With Longford having last played in the championship 9 weeks ago come the 19th July,it is not known what shape they are in.Longford have home advantage and this should be another obstacle for Laois to overcome. The last time these two teams played,Longford kicked an amazing 19 wides and had a goal disallowed while Laois kicked 9 wides.

Laois have had problems with Clancy and Quigley while Ross Munnelly and Colm Parkinson are not playing as well as previous years and the whole team looked deflated against Wexford.Longford were unlucky and nearly caught Westmeath on the hop towards the end of their encounter and broke the blanket defence towards the end.

With the Barden brothers and Brian Kavanagh,Longford should utilise home advantage and make the next round of the qualifiers.

    Verdict: Longford

    Offaly v Down

Offaly had a successful league campaign albeit in Division 4 and put up a good challenge against Westmeath in a very dire match.Down have the accolade of taking Tyrone to a replay and then knocking them out in extra time. This match is in Tullamore which is a bonus to Offaly but Ronan Sexton and Benny Coulter are key men for Down while the McNamees are the target for Offaly. However,Downs strength in depth should pull them through.

    Verdict: Down

    Limerick v Meath

Limerick gave a good account of themselves against Cork in a match they should have won.Meanwhile Meaths last outing proved to be a total collapse against a resilient Wexford team that came from 10 points down with 20 minutes left to beat Meath by a point. The Gaelic Grounds are a very tough venue for any team to travel to and win.Cooke is an amazing player for Limerick while Geraghty,Faye and Sheridan are veterans.

Meath will be anxious to get back on track after a disasterous League and Leinster campaign and this match should be the stepping stone to recovery but only just.

    Verdict: Meath

    Louth v Tyrone

Louth didn't have the best league campaign and were eventually throttled by Dublin in the space of the second half in Croke Park.Tyrone survived relegation from Division 1 even with their injury list.Tyrones outings against Down will have them match fit.

Louth will flourish in a smaller venue and at home in Drogheda.Tyrone will want to call on the experience of Dooher (if fit) and Mulligan.

    Verdict: Tyrone

    Tipperary v Westmeath

Tipperary gained promotion from Division 4 and are an improving side.Westmeath won division 2 and can count themselves unlucky not to take Dublin to a replay. The difference in standards is very noticeable to any person who has a passing interest in GAA.David Duffy,Glennon and Dessie Dolan should have it more easy in this fixture while Tipperary are not expected to cope with the talent thats in the Westmeath team.

The only questions that will be asked before this fixture is how many points Westmeath will win by and if they will stick to their blanket defense gameplan.

    Verdict: Westmeath

    Donegal v Roscommon

Donegal came off a bruising encounter with Derry and some say they were very unlucky not to win.Meanwhile Roscommon have been in turmoil since John Maughan left.Recent hammerings by Galway in the championship and demolition derbys at the hands of Dublin and Armagh have shown that Roscommon should be picked off easily and the venue Ballybofey further compounds to their woes.

    Verdict: Donegal

    Monaghan v Derry

Derry travel to Clones with revenge on their minds from last year. However, last years clash was an Ulster semi-final.This time both teams find themselves in the qualifiers after being dumped out by Fermanagh.Monaghan started the year very brightly amidst speculation that their run last year was by luck while Derry won Division 1 with good wins over Galway,Mayo,Donegal and Kerry.

Tommy Freeman is the key man for Monaghan while Paddy and Eoin Bradley along with Enda Muldoon are the main threats from Derry.Joe Diver and Dick Clerkin is an interesting head to head but Derry should rule midfield and the Derry forwards should expose Monaghans defense.

    Verdict: Derry

I agree with most of that except I think Laois will scrape past Longford.

Blackbelt, I also agree with most of your predictions although I don't think Westmeath will hammer Tipp. Westmeath will win alright but it won't be a thrashing. Tipp are decent enough, got promotion from div 4 and only lost to Limerick by 3 points. Added to that Westmeath don't really have the forwards to run up a big score, their main strength is in their defensive solidity.

Hoping for a waterford win in the hurling to set up a great game with the yellow bellies.

I think if Waterford win, then they will play Cork or Galway because they already played Clare.

Here is an explanation of the possible pairings from todays papers
No seeding will apply to keep teams from the same province apart in the All-Ireland hurling semi-finals even if they have already met in the provincial championships.

That means that if results in this weekend's qualifiers and the All-Ireland quarter-finals a week later go a certain way, Kilkenny could meet Offaly in what would be a Leinster semi-final re-match while Tipperary could face Clare or Cork, both of whom they beat in Munster.

There was criticism last year when Kilkenny were paired with Wexford in the semi-final, having earlier beaten them in the Leinster final. It resulted in another one-sided game which Kilkenny won by 10 points.

The alternative was to pair Kilkenny v Limerick and Waterford v Wexford but that was ruled out because of the pre-ordained nature of the draw.

The semi-final draw is again pre-arranged this year. However, in terms of whether there will be any provincial re-matches at that stage, much will depend on results from the remaining two qualifier ties and the All-Ireland quarter-finals.

The quarter-final pairings are arranged to avoid (if possible) games between counties who have already met in the provincial championships.

Of the six teams chasing the semi-final places, Clare v Waterford is the only possible re-match so if Waterford beat Offaly they will play Wexford in the quarter-final.

Thurles is the venue for the last round of the qualifiers this Saturday when Galway face Cork at 7.0, preceded by the meeting of Waterford and Offaly at 5.0.

    permutations

    All-Ireland quarter-finals (July 27)

l If Galway and Waterford win this Saturday's qualifiers the quarter-final line-up will be: Clare v Galway; Wexford v Waterford.

l If Cork and Waterford win, it will be Clare v Cork and Wexford v Waterford.

l If Galway and Offaly win they will be paired with Clare and Wexford in an open draw.

l If Cork and Offaly win, they will be paired with Clare and Wexford in an open draw.

    Semi-finals:

l Kilkenny v Clare or qualifier (Aug 10); Tipperary v Wexford or qualifier (Aug 17).

Does anyone know if I'll be able to buy stand tickets for the Meath Limerick game at the ground? Guessing there'll be about 12,000 there so there should be tickets on sale.

They'll either be taking cash at the stiles or tickets will be on sale at the grounds, either way you wont need a ticket in advance.

Thanks, they're on sale with Ticketmaster but don't want to pay the extra charges to buy off them.

    Weekends games:

    Long v Laois
Cant see Longford who last weekend hadn't even enough to turn out for a challenge game due to injuries beating Laois. Laois beat Meath is challenge last week, looked good & i feel they will have far too much for Longford

    Offaly v Down
Down should get through this, Offaly are not a bad side, but think Down will have enough

    Lim v Meath
This could be very interesting, Limerick had the game won v Cork only to fall apart at the end. We've seen since what Cork did to Kerry, so where does this leave Limerick?!
Meath, its hard to know, they hammered a brutal Carlow side, looked great in 1st half v Wex, then fell apart. This will be so close, but maybe just Meath by a pt or 2.

    Kildare v Cavan
2 poor enough sides. But with home advantage & ive heard things have picked up in Kildare since loss to Wicklow, id take Kildare to win this in a close game.

    Monaghan v Derry
Hard not go for a draw here, but with the game in Clones & so much expectation on Derry, id fancy Monaghan for a shock win here

    Tipp v Westmeath
Tipp did well to get outta Div 4 this year & end up here & not be in the TM Cup, but i think this is as far as they will get. Westmeath are a decent side, wont score a whole lot due to being so defensive, but should win this by 4 or 5 pts.

    Donegal v Roscommon
Easy win for Donegal, especially with home advantage. Prob be the biggest winning margin of wkend.

    Louth v Tyrone
Should be a win for Tyrone. Louth battled hard 1st half v Dubs, then let in a goal & just fell apart. Have a couple of good players, but not enough to trouble Tyrone. Tyrone by 6 or 7.

Tommy Murphy Cup Also on this weekend so worth a comment.

    Lond v Sligo
Has to be a sligo win by a few pts. Sligo must be wondering as 2007 connacht champs how they ended up in Ruislip for a nothing game Mid-July!

    Antrim v Carlow
Home advantage is key here. Both sides are depleted, Antrim have 8 of their panel from championship gone, while Carlow have gone for youth, a panel based mainly on last years quality minor side & this years U-21s who did better than any Carlow 21s team had for 25 years. Also this is cos, 10 of the championship team have no interest in playing TM football.
But despite youthful enthusiasm, id say Antrim should take this one.

    Clare - Leitrim
I liked the look of Leitrim v Galway. Think they are a decent side & prob are unlucky to be in TM Cup & not qualifiers. Clare are a mixed bag, won the McGrath cup with some great wins, then lost in league to likes of Carlow & Waterford. Then came back & beat Offaly! Hard team to call, but id fancy Leitrim have enough to win a close game.

    Wicklow v Waterford
Wicklow had a great Leinster championship, beating Kildare & running Laois so close. They deserve more than TM Cup.
Waterford had a good league, had great away wins in Carlow & Antrim. But never carried this form into Munster Champ. Bad loss to Clare in a poor game.
I reckon Wicklow will win this one, and probably easier than expected.

Tickets at the stiles on the night. There will defo not be 12,000 in attendance, i would imagine maybe 7,000 tops, especially with many Limerick GAA people so annoyed by the hurlers performance last weekend.

I don't know for sure, but i would imagine there will be tickets available on the night outside the grounds. Safest thing to do would be to purchase off Ticketmaster. See gaa.ie for details.

do you know if Thurles have the bar code scanners like at Croker? I doubt at this stage I'll have the tickets posted out so I'll just get the online ones

We should win but I'll take a 1 pointer.

Btw, the game being in Ardfinnan is giant pain in the arse, adds 60+ miles to Thurles trip and means 400miles of driving for me tomorrow :(
