    Hi

Need some advise, help and reduced stress and blood pressure levels.

My 3 month old Dell XPS M1530's hard drive packed up last night. Ran the self diagnostic and got the error message 2000-0143. From googling this it appears my hard drive is fecked so i have e-mailed Dell and expect i will get a replacement HD off them.

Problem is i have a wealth of holiday and wedding pictures on it which i am none too keen on loosing. Most i have back up on discs (thank Jebus) but i was at a wedding over the weekend and have approx 400 pictures (copied from mine and friends cameras) on the laptop. Most camera's have been wiped since then so i am pretty screwed!

Is there anyway of recovering or coping the info on the old HD?

Any suggestions would be appreciated and try to keep them in "simple" english please. I ain't none too smart with them thar compooters tec-knee-cal lingo.....

Its a SATA drive, You can put it in any modern desktop PC and run some recovery software to try and get the data off it....

Also if the camera cards have been "wiped" but not used extensively since you can use a card reader and some recovery software to try recover the photos directly from the camera

Cheers Conzy. I'll bring it into the IT techy guy at work and see what he can do for me.

Your hard drive can be fecked in two ways, either controller card (circut board ) or the sealed disks itself. If its the controller card you may be lucky to get an EXACT same working hdd on EBay and swap the controller. If it is the sealed disk you may strike luck by placing it in a freezer compartment of a fridge for a short period. Sometimes works and gives you just enough time to get the stuff you want off it if placed in a USB caddy..

I have retrieved data from both methods in the past. There are companies that specialise in retrieving data from faulty drives but they can charge several times more than a PC is worth. A hard drive is meant to be a just temporary means of storing data.

My new EEE PC 900 dose not have any mechanical hard drive. :)
