Golf GTI Problem

I'm having a problem with my Golf GTI, The temp gauge shoots straight to 3/4's and the temp warning light comes on as soon as I start the car, now this even happens if i only go as far as battery so the car isn't overheating.

I replaced the Temp Sender and the Temp Sensor switches and still the same problem. All fuses are fine, so I'm a bit stumped now. Don't want to give up and go to a mechanic, would like to do at least one little task properly myself :)

So any help or insight greatly appreciated

would it be the guage itself?

Have you fiddled with the instrument binnacle lately?

Those VW printed circuit foils that control the instruments are a bit touchy. You could have a kink/broken connection there. Unlikely though if you haven been near it in ages.

The gauges were never out of the car. I was reading about thr sensors and apparently a malfunctioning one would cause the care to splutter and cough intermittently which is also happening to me now.

I replaced the switches with parts from otto, would I be as well to go and get them from VW?

Sounds to me like you have a wiring fault. Also isn't the sensor for the gauge seperate to the one for the ECU, its that way on most cars.

A faulty coolant temperature sensor will cause the car to splutter as the cold start system remains active, but it doesn't affect the temp gauge.

Maybe the Golf is different !

could possibly be connected to the fan switch then? Even though the fan is grand? Switch could still be dodgy.

If your car was my car then I would tell you that one of your negative connections on the central electric negative connector is corroded/badly connected ..but I don't know if your Golf has the same setup as my T3.

The thing that I'm talking about is usually star shaped, bolted to the metal body under the dashboard/near the fusebox and has dozens of connectors sitting on it.

I'll have a go at that so, I'll check the Haynes for that. At least all of the sensors are replaced and renewed now.

    Thanks Peasant
