I am looking for a device to store photos while on a round the world trip. I estimate I would need to be able to store 2000 photographs maximum. Any suggestions?

I got myself a Vosonic, think its' the 8360 model although they may have stopped making that one now. It came with a 120G hard drive but that can easily be changed to a bigger one, reads all types of memory cards and can even use it to play videos whilst sat bored on the plane as well.

I have the Canon M80 - 80GB storage device. Reads CF and SD cards. Can also be used to store sound and video. It uses the same camera battery as the Canon 40D/30D/20D cameras. Very handy, for me.

I think there's some sort of gizmo you can plug into your iPod.

Yeah there is, maybe something like this?

Couldn't you just buy loads of flash cards for your camera.
ie a 4 gig card would hold over 400 RAW files.
You can get even 8gig cards for less than €50 in some places.

Then when your flash card is full, simply post it home.

That way if you have 5 cards with 400 photos on each it
reduces your chances of losing all your photos if the backup
device were to fail, get stolen etc....

I brought an eee with me on my travels earlier this year. Combined with a WD Passport it was perfect - internet access anywhere there was wifi, loads of storage for pics (built in SD card reader in the eee - put the card straight from your camera into the machine and copy to the Passport). Both are hardy enough to fling into your handbag, and the added bonus is that you can watch movies/read books on it while travelling as well. I used prepare posts to a travel diary while hanging around, attaching pics and all, then just hit send when I got into WiFi range.

If you're feeling antisocial, don't produce these in front of other people, as everyone in a 10ft radius immediately wanders over to ask what it is and if they can be your friend.

Both of these fit handily into a ziploc sandwich bag as well - useful for protecting them from spilt mojitos.

If I count my avg. RAW size 8MB/picture * 2000 pcs = 16Gig only, also not a "big" problem 4 pcs of 4Gig memory!
In JPEG format is around half of RAW also 2-3 pcs of 4 Gig card be enough. Next question is: how big card can handle the machine in which format CF, SD, XD etc... 'cos you not talk about your photo machine. I think so if You don't know what's mean the RAW shooting in this case you never use(d). Have I right?

    These are a simple solution.

However if you do not know what capacity you need it may be a waste.

What sort of Camera do you have?

I have a friend with a Canon compact, can't remember the model, but she went on a world trip for 6 weeks with a 2Gb SD Card. Came back with about 1000 jpegs & half the card empty.

So the cheapest way to go is to get a few memory cards. Maybe drop into a photo shop along the way & pay to have the cards backed up onto CD's just in case you get a card corruption or the camera stolen etc.

If you get an iRiver H340 you can get a firmware upgrade that lets it store photos. You'd have to put them onto it via USB and not memory card.

@Thoie: Does the eeepc power the WD Passport OK when only running on battery power for you as I just saw a mention on some review that it might struggle?

I've not had any trouble with the power for my Vosonic as that has it's own battery as well, but wondering if I couldn't do with a bit more portable storage capacity now so considering one of them to add to the eeepc as well.
