Michael Keane has been released by St Patrick's Athletic for failing to reach the weight loss targets the club set him.

    Harsh?

In his defence he said he was turning up every day for training.

Were his performances becoming worse, or did he just not get on with the manager?

It will be interesting to see how the appeals go.

AFAIK all top level players have "body fat" clauses built into their contracts somewhere, it's perfectly understandable tbh.

Case of 'pot and kettle' from the club who emplyed Pat Dolan for long enough!

In fairness if a model put on lots of weight she would be sacked for being too fat.
I saw a picture of him in the paper and he looks grossly overweight.
He can turn up for training all he likes but if he eats 10 sausage rolls on the way home whats the point.
From what i heard he was already warned repeatedly so its a fair outcome in my opinion

he was on over 3k a week i believe and he wasnt even getting in the team. looks like they decided to cut they're losses.

Sack him, maybe he'll appreciate how hard it is to earn 3,000 a week when he goes looking for another club.

More industries should take this stance tbh. Sacking fatties can only be good for them in a the long run, as without a job they won't be able to afford so much junkfood thus losing weight and becoming healthier and more productive members of society.

(Only some of the above is tongue in cheek.)

Deseves it. What a total disgrace. Your meant to be an athlete. I don't even compete and i'd never let myself go around like that.

i worked with a lad who played in an EL team who's bodyfat was around 18%. at the time that was the same as me (i'm no footballer) and he was given major warnings about him being overweight. he had to drop it to 15% iirc.

i'm now down to that bodyweight so if any EL teams want to give me €3000 per week just send me a PM. i don't play football but when i'm kicking balloons around work i'm like an irish ribery... :D

I’m sure St. Pats took legal advice before they did this. If they got this wrong they’ll have to pay compensation so of course it’s important to get the legality and the clauses in the contract checked before any action was taken.

I remember Paul Osam (of St. Pats) becoming a spokesperson for Weight Watchers.
I’m not making this up, I’ve seen one of their information packs and he gave an interview and how succussful weight watchers was for him.
    This was around 2003

I remember Mikey from the schoolboy teams at Bohs, he wasn't overweight back then, probably one of the best players I played with or against in schoolboy football too. If a club can get him to full fitness I'd say he could be the best player in the eL, or top 5 at least.

Anyone think he can kick back into gear with another club?

Game has become more professional since then Ozo could was big but could always manage to move about the pitch until the last year or town when his legs went.
Keane was a well paid full time professional and couldnt get his weight down in over a year I game him the benifit of the doubt the first season asuming he would lose it over the break he lost **** all and has only made 2 apperences in the league this season both as sub.
LOI football is becoming more professional and the days when you could get away with eating/drinking like a darts player are coming to an end

This is a Winston Bogard Chelsea situation. The guy was doing the bare minimum and thought he could get by doing that. Pats warned him to get below a certain weight by a certain date and he did not. Bye bye.

I'm dissapointed, the thread title misled me to believe it was about Mr Lampard.

On a serious note, is the guy any good or did it suit Pats to offload him for nothing?

no sympathy for the guy he's supposed to be a professional footballer ffs, getting paid 3g's a week??i wish i had his talent!

No sympathy from me. If you want to be a professional athlete you should be prepared to eat like one.

Sure Razor Ruddock practically made a carear out of being a fat bastid, and he didn't do too badly out of it.

Well he is in theory a good player with the ability to be one of the better players in the league his attitude just stinks.
