    hey,

I am looking to rent an apartment in Rio for about a month over christmas. I have found several websites which only take bookings over the phone. Hotels are ridiculously expensive!

Has anyone ever rented an apartment over there? Anyone any advice? I have never been there....

    Cheers

What area are you thinking of going to? I would recommend Ipanema as Copacabana is very run down these days plus all the main bars and restaurants are in Ipanema so you'll just end up paying for taxis all the time. When you say hostels are expensive what exactly do you mean? I paid about $10 a night in a 6 bed dorm ensuite in Copa (not over christmas though). You're right to go with an apt for that length of time though. Try the lonely planet website adn their travel forum. Go to lonelyplanet.com and then onto the thorn tree forum, search the Brazil section and the Carnival section and there should be references to websites for booking apts.

Thanks. I said hotels, not hostels! They end up being really really dear. I want to get as nice as possible without taking out a mortgage. I'll try to lonely planet thing. Cheers.

Opps sorry! Yeah Hotels in Rio are ridiculous, I stayed in a 3 star one for a few days as I was so hungover I just needed my own space (damn those caprinahans!) think it was about 70 euros for a crappy single room with a view of an apt. block. Look on lonely planet site - I was on it this morning and their were a few threads about apts in Rio with people rating individual companies.
