I was wondering how to prove who owns a horse? I know there is a document called a horse passport but I don't know if this details the owner of the horse. My ex and I are going through a messy separation. There are horses that have been on our land getting all food and vet bills paid for and now my ex denies owning them, says they are just being minded for a friend. Any ideas how I can get the owner's name? Thanks

The only document is the passport tbh. It sounds like a difficult situation.

Do you want to get rid of the horses off your land? I think you might need a solicitors advice in this.

Horse passport would be the only way I would know of.

Perhaps if they were SJAI registered - but I don't know if owner details are recorded as well.

Sounds like a messy situation - hope you get through it ok.

the irish horse board should be able to fill you in on this, i know the owners name and address is stated on every passport as well as the member number. but then you have a problem of matching the passport to the horse, and to get that information from the horse board you either need the passport number or the horses registered name.

i went through something similar a few years ago, the ex claimed my horses were his, and would have gotten away with it had they all not been registered in my name and i had the passports

by the way isnt it illegal now to own or move a horse without a passport for it? i remember it was going to come in a few years back so i got all the ponies here registered for passports just incase. but dont know if it came in eventually or now

If they were chipped ... with the number, would you manage to get the relevant information from the Irish Horse Board ?
    Just wondering.
Best of luck with this difficult situation.
