Jaysus, I know the man had a bereavement recently, but he does my fcukin head in.

Far too slick ,far too smart, far too frikken smooth for my taste.

I am open to opinions that my opinion of him is not fair.

    What do other people think.???

I wouldn't be a huge fan of his, he can be decent on boxing and occasionally on athletics, but I'd usually avoid his commentary, or presenting of sports shows.

For slick, I feel he is polished.

For smart, I prefer to read that he knows what he is talking about.

For fricken smooth, I think that he is able to read a sport well and with little intrusion; unlike say Brian Carthy who fills up every waken minute on air.

Personally, I think that RTE are lucky to have a man as durable, passionate about sports and as well informed about pretty much any event he covers.

    respect your opinion sir.

I get the impression he's a true sports fan which is better than many presenters who use sport as a way of breaking into the industry.

Anyway I'd forgive him anything for his "Different class...different CLASS!" commentary over Maradona's goal against England.

Have to hand it to the Dude..knows his stuff...despite his grating Ardee accent.

Just a little to,well..stylised..for my taste...thought he looked a bit pale when commenting last Sat on the Bearnard D fight.....but maybe it was the result of a close encounter with strange lookin alien..or Marty Morrissey....Jesus what is that guy doin with his "hair".

He's too old to commentate on footie effectivly, the number of times he finds himself about 2 moves behind the action while misprouncing or indeed mis-identifing a player does me head him. If there's an alternative I'll weatch that.

    Mike.

Jimmy Magee has forgotten more about all sports than most people will ever
    know.

knows his shtuff, a gent, and does know more about sport then the rest of the rte sports department put together, but god there is nothing worse then his commentary on the premiership highlights.

I totally agree with the passionate quote above.....he knows absolutely everything. He has and exceptional memory down to the finest detail.
    He's a legend.

Amen to that. Shoulda retired years ago and saved us from his miserable ramblings. Worst commentator going.

Jimmy Magee is a legendary and an ever-enthusiastic broadcaster whose love of commentating has never once waned, even through personal tragedy and untold grief, and anyone who knocks him does not appreciate or respect that!

Show some respect to the legend they call The Memory Man whose length of years attaining depth of knowledge far surpasses any one of his peers and younger colleagues!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,608 ✭✭✭themont85

Agree with the above poster. On the BBC they have like a legendary commentator for each sport, for us all those sports our rolled into one in the form of The Memory Man. Champion, pure champion.

I like Magee for most sports that I know nothing about because he is continuously informing his listeners of vital information. He will be a must for the Olympics. However I don't like him for football. I don't need to be constantly reminded of who someone is because I more than likely already know.

    I agree with you.

For football he's not great....but for Womans Hammer event in the olymipics, surely he'll have a story or two to tell about the competetors, not to mention the rules in detail.

I remember when you couldn't really avoid Jimmy..back before we had the wide choice of radio/tv channels of today.

When he comes onto Marian Finucanes show on a Sunday to discuss the sport for the day, I have to switch off. His interaction with her is painful to listen to.

I think he believes in his 'Memory Man' tag too much (does anyone remember Know your Sport on the tv, when Jimmy would be tested..cringe inducing stuff) and has to try to prove to us that he is a legend of sports broadcasting by including irrelevant statistics and meaningless facts.

That said, I heard some of the interview he did with Marian regarding the loss of his son recently..very tough time for him.

He used to box for Ireland. I remember seeing him and Nigel Benn squaring up to each other about 10 or 11 years ago. :D

If only youtube was around then.

Christ, that was a good one. A brave man to take it to Mr. Benn but Jimmy did and all :)

I love the guy, and I love the defence of him here. I hope he gets a lot to do in the Olympics. I'll watch the synchronised pin-bending quarter-finals if Jimmy Magee is commentating, because he will know everything about the history of pins, the difference between the European and Asian traditions of bending, and the Latvian deputy captain's discus-throwing grandmother. And he'll get genuinely excited about it.

Who cares if he gets the odd name wrong? It's not radio, and a momentary confusion is a small price to pay for genius. He's the Michelangelo of sports commentary, and the 400-metre cross-country hop skip and jump is his Sistine Chapel, so it is.

I know, and Benn only had about a couple of stone, about a foot in height and 30 odd years on Jimmy :D

Jimmy is cringe making - also nearly injure my shins getting to the remote to turn him off. Comes across to me as smug, humorless and uninteresting.

Absolute legend i was brought up with him sunday afternoons on the radio, does everything without fuss or effort.

Cringing champion of the banal Irish sporting achievements. If it's mediocre but Irish then it's gotta be brilliant. Particularly cringing is his defence of Michelle Smith. He believes her and by gum ain't no-one gonna deny the authenticity of her swag.
Retire the codger and only wheel'm out for interesting facts on the scottish women's curling team.
    Memory man my arse.

Legend, simple as. A real gentleman. I agree that soccer isn't his strongest attribute but boxing and athletics he's King.

I can't stand him... I find it difficult to watch sports when he is commentating on it. I think he carries around 'the big book of platitudes' with him, cos that's all that comes out of his mouth.

    Terrible

Jimmy Magee is a legend! What the listener requires from a commentator/reporter is that they're knowledgable about the sport, passionate about it and that they can bring it across in an informative and descriptive way. For me, and I stress for me, he ticks all the boxes!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,929 ✭✭✭raven136

magee was a great commentator but is now shocking. His boxing stuff is the worst, builds up opponents, forgets shots and comesout with pure rubbish.
