I heard Perth is the best place to go as there are a lot of solo travellers... any ideas?

You meet them everywhere in fairness. Big cities, small outback towns. There's plenty travelling around Oz... and everywhere else! Don't worry, stay in a hostel and you'll meet couples, groups and single people all doing what you're doing, travelling!

There is no 'best' place. it is usually always up to the person.
If you can make conversation with someone then that is how to meet people.

Alot of hostels do 'nights' out, as a big group or tours etc etc etc

Once you are friendly, out going etc, then talking making friends isn't an issue.

Yeah no best place really depends on a lot of circumstances.

Sydney in December is normally really busy (most travelers seem to try be in Sydney for Christmas).

When we went Melbourne was real busy because of the commonwealth games and grand prix being on at the same time, but then emptied because it cold.

Then Perth was busy with Irish when we went there because Ireland where playing a rugby match there.

Best bet is to pick a city you think you want to start in, book yourself into a hostel for a few nights and off you go. With a little effort you will meet people anywhere in Oz.
