I've been looking at Jap import centres. Lots of the cars seem to missing their gear knobs.

Does anyone know what happens them ?

Is it in Japan or when they reach Ireland ?

I've heard of cars missing turbo timers, wheels, amps etc. I also heard that the bits went missing on this end. no way to prove anything though.

The handlers up in the docks have a reputation for "collecting" parts from the imports...no wonder really when all the cars are left open up there..

Many people are wising up to this now and are gettin valuable parts shipped over seperately..e.g. guages, turbo timers

Indeed but it's usually parts that the new owner may not have known existed in the first place. A friend of mind used to work in the docks where the Japanese vehicles were off loaded. He said that many the 4x4s came with winches and extra wheels with snow tyres. These were usually put aside for resale.

I always figured that the dealers unscrew the gear knobs as a theft deterrent.. because the imported jap car tend not to have imobilizers and the like..

how does not having a gearknob make a car more difficult to steal?

This doesn't work any more as car thiefs have copped on to this and now bring backup gear knobs with them. :D

Mine was missing on my recent import,it was on the car when it left japan but not when it got here.I know its only a gear knob but new from honda its something silly like €150 for it!But yet all the paperwork and other accesories were left untouched in the car?

Depending on who you use to clear the car it might not be locked in the docks either,at times you can roam freely down there so im sure oppertunists grab themselfs what the can when they can.

you dont even need a back up gear knob, the actual gear stick is still there so you can easily change gears without any problems.

the most common gear knobs to be stolen are the Type R's, as they a gunmetal with red writing, they just then get fitted into nearly every other car out there!

my Teg R was missing its knob when i bought mine, but you can pick them easily on ebay, icetronix etc etc honda wanted 193 euro for it 3 years ago

You ask for a gear knob. Halfords have generic ones. Go to a scrapyard and you'll probably find a HR-V one for a couple of quid.
