PC stopped picking up internet connection, how to fix?

    Have laptop and pc working from the one internet connection for a long time now. Laptop through ethernet cable and pc through USB connection. Three days ago the pc wasn't able to connect and hasn't done since. The laptop still connects. Any ideas how to reconnect on the pc:confused:
    Don't know that much about computers so the easier the better.

    You could try a PC Restart with USB unplugged. When PC starts, plug n USB and see if it is detected. Also, you could plug out power to Modem, and plug back in (if it does not have a Reset Button).

    Is your PC running the ZoneAlarm firewall?

    yep, a microsoft patch released last week broke a fair few third party firewall apps, so i reckon this is what happened to your pc. uninstall kb951748 and you should be back up and running on the pc.

    Yes I have Zone Alarm installed but on laptop and pc. Excuse my ignorance but what is kb951748 and how do I go about uninstalling it please?:(

    Damn, it's zone alarm alright! Just turned it off and net came back on. Anybody have any recommendations for a good free firealarm or how do I configure zonealarm to accept my internet?

    go to start --> control panel --> add or remove programs, and remove the patch from there.
    or else you can drop the internet security settings in zoneaalarm from high to medium.
    or else download the latest version of the zonealarm software and install it, these fixes will get your internet working again.....

    That was meant to say firewall not firealarm in my previous post! ok, gone onto control panel, what exactly am I looking to remove?

    open the add/remove progams applet, click on show updates at the top of the screen, and remove the update called security update for windows xp (KB951748)

    have ya tried comodo i find it much easier to use instead of zone alarm

    Zone Labs now have a fix for the Microsoft mess so just download the latest version of ZA and all will be well. :)
