Is it unusual to use Property Management Agencies?

I don't many people who have ever used Property Mangt. Agencies to rent their houses & when I post here there is no reply. Are most of them messers & has anyone ever found any of them to be reliable?

We used a big name agency and had a nightmare with the tenants from hell. Got word of a guy out on his own and he's looked after the house for the past 3 years for half the price of the agency with twice the service.
