Are these 2 pictures caused by using an internal flash and not an external flash?
An external flash distributes the light more evenly?
Waiting for 430EX II to be released. (Not into the 580EX II as it would be bigger and heavier)
whats the prob with them? The fact the background is dark?

    Hi AnimalRights,
I think the problem youre referring to is actually caused by the flash being fired direct at the subject rather than bounced. It also doesnt look diffused enough.
It does look like its an external flash but its just mounted on the hotshoe rather than held off camera.

An external flash (I assume you mean flashgun) does distribute the light better, just in a wider arc, it still needs to be bounced and diffused.
    Hope this is helpful,
    Alan

Indeed it does Alan, I know I'm learning when I'm basically answering my own questions.

    :)

/waits for 430Ex II to be delivered.

Remember that shuuter speed won't affect the output of a flash in realtion to the subject. Apertures control how strong your flash will be at a constant distance/iso/output setting.

If you wanted the more ambient in the background then you'd need a longer shutter time.

Here's an (extreme) example of a shot at 1/15th or 1/20th I think with flashgun mounted on hotshoe and bounced off the ceiling and using a bounce card. Granted the ISO was 3200 as well I think and f5.6?

Sorry for asking a dumb question but what do you mean by bouncing the flash? I'm assuming you're pointing at the wall/ceiling rather than the subject??

Sprinkles, youre right, if you point a flash direct at someone it casts a nasty shadown directly behind them, as well as flattening the details of their face with the harsh flash light, so instead you use a wall or ceiling to bounce the flash off, this was its reflected behind the person lighting that area and ensuring there are no harsh shadows, you also light the subject, but the light is weaker and softer as its reflected so it looks much softer on the subject.
there are lots of good websites and tutorials about flash usage out there, well worth a look.

buying a flash diffuser softens the light reducing these problems anyway

true, true, but if you still fire it direct at the subject you will still get shadows, just not as harsh.
