Went to a gig last night and accidently took all my pictures in RAW instead of JPG.
Never used RAW before and would rather have them in JPG, is their a way for me to batch convert them to JPG?
I have the App that comes with Canon.

Get the trial version of Lightroom, while you have it try shooting in RAW+jpeg see if you can see any difference.

Yeah but at the moment I want to change my RAW batch of photos to JPG!
I don't really know how to use RAW and all the black and white photos I took come up as colour too!!!

Which Canon app have you got?
I got Digital Photo Professional with my 400D... I just click one thumbnail... hit ctrl+a then ctrl+b and the batch process dialog pops up with all the pics in that folder selected.

Get lightroom, import the photos in one batch job, export jpegs as another, can be all done with about 5 clicks....

Better though if you play around with them a little.

I have DPP too, I will try that now.

ctrl+A selects them all, but ctrl+B does nothing?

RAW will always record colour images

there is no such thing as a black and white RAW image :D

I use capture NX for my batch processing and works superb.

Download a trial for capture nx and give it a go I am sure u will love it

Now that you have accidently done the correct thing, keep shooting in RAW. You will have a lot more flexibility. If you are looking for really good B&W then shoot RAW & do the conversion later. I would highly reccomend the technique taught by Guy Gowan.

I converted all to jpgs lol, not ready for Raw yet.
Maybe some hands on help from a friend will make me learn.

I hope you kept the RAW files?

    AnimalRights,

when you say you're not "ready" for RAW yet, can you tell me why you feel that way?

To all intents and purposes, RAW is not such a big difference from jpg if you're processing them manually anyway. Is it linked to the software that you use? If you have Photoshop or Photoshop Elements it shouldn't be a big deal. DPP is handy for processing them alright but...

    just wondering, that's all.

Also, without wanting to cause another RAW vs JPG argument, I would point out that either might be appropriate depending on circumstances.

    Yeah but why?
    Gonna delete 'em soon.
I always delete my photos once I up them, I'm not a hoarder, same when I get a new PC or phone, I transfer nothing over, I r lazy bastid. :o

Where do you up them ? common places compress uploads and the file loses its ORIGINAL integrity, ive kept every single photo ever, its not like its a 700mb movie file.

I think you've just caused a collective heart attack around the place.

Anything that is technically okay - eg not under/over exposed or heavily blurred due camera shack or out of focus, I keep. You NEVER know when you might need them again.

You've lost me. You get a RAW file. You can process it the same as a jpg in any one of a load of different software packages. There's nothing different about taking the photograph.

    I don't get what you're scared of.

Best way to learn is by trial and error, and doing it yourself dude.

and seconded @ collective heart attack :D

Oh and DPP is the biggest pile of shoite.. Lightroom ftfw.

DPP is not that bad. I don't use it because I do the conversions manually in Photoshop and Lightroom has completely disenchanted me on both occasions that I test it. For fast conversions if I am really stuck I use ACDSee Pro but I believe that Picasa is also an option.

I just find it far harder then when I do PP on a JPEG, Guess I never gave it enough time, someone has offered me PS CS3 so maybe I'll start again and learn it.

Jesus you must have millions of gigs worth then?
I take lots of pictures, I've a 500gb hd and an external 300 but hey I am not someone who likes keeping photos, well not normal gig ones or non family ones.

Why do you have so much HD space so if you don't keep stuff? Just saying like, I save every "good" photograph in RAW + JPG and it takes pittance room:o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,067 ✭✭✭AnimalRights

I have other stuff on my HD too though!
    Films/Gigs that I film/massive music folder
I like my HD to be at least half empty so my anti virus/Defragmenter/Adaware run faster and just generally run faster, I have a very powerful PC and I like to keep it superfast. :D

i've been shooting mostly in RAW since I get the camera in April. about 2,200 RAW photos now in about 28GB. with 500GB i have, i don't it's going to be a problem at all to keep shooting and save the photos in RAW.

and, i rarely use DPP as I mostly transfer the photos to harddrive, add in Lightroom collection, tag and do few post processing. that's pretty much my workflow.

You don't have to keep them on your HDD's

When it gets a bit full burn then to DVD. If you care about your images then make a couple of copies. DVD's are only €1 each.

If you were shooting film would you throw away your Negatives?

I save all my original jpegs or RAW files & have done so since 2002.
