    its german so good quality

    cons:
    2 litre gas guzzeler,
    probably owned by a boy racer
    never buy a car near dublin
    will be targeted by thieves who love cars ike this
    high insurance and tax
    high milage

    I'm taking what you say on board but.

    2litre gas guzzler? Not really, should get 35mpg as I drive motorways all the time. I currently drive a 1.5 Impreza which gets less.

    High insurance? Nope, another €20 on top of what I'm paying now. You'd be surprised how cheap I can insure cars.

    The mileage isn't that high, 83,000 is not bad at in fact for a car thats going for €2,500.

    I was looking more for peoples opinions of the car itself, are they a good drive? Do they actually live up to GTi badge?

    that model is supposed to be decent, but still not as good as the Mk1 GTi, the only modern one that compares is the current one so I have heard.

    Whats wrong with the Impreza, 1.5 too much power for ya!! lol

    Go for a decent mk2 instead would be my advice. The mk3 doesn't live up to the badge.

    I think you've guessed whats wrong with it, its dog slow and its bad on juice. If I'm going to drive something thats bad on juice it should at least be quick ffs. At least its better than an Octavia though

    If I saw one for that money and mileage I'd consider it. I'd actually like a go of a 306 GTi as well or a Clio Williams, but they're going for mad money.

    Might not be earth shattering performance but a Golf GTI with 85k on the clock for €2500, ffs, whats wrong with that?

    Nothing, thats what.
    Just make sure of the usuals, T.belt done and a reasonable service history. If it runs good, its a cheap decent car.

    MkIII and MkIV Golf GTis are not considered by enthusiasts as being great hot hatches in the GTi fashion, they put on extra weight, not particularly quick and don't handle as good as their predicessors.

    OP if I was looking for a GTi of that era I would hold out for MkII, might be a bit older and cost a few quid extra but worth it imo. Get one owned by an enthusiast as there are alot of trashed ones around.
