Is there a link between bipolar disorder and religious hallucinations?

I know that I read somewhere that there was a link between bipolar disorder and religious hallucinations of a visual or auditory nature. I can't find anything about it on the net now, does anyone know where I could get some information on this topic?

(Also as an additional aside - I know that bipolar is genetic. If a mother or father is bipolar would it be common for many of the children to inherit the illness, or would it be unlikely that more than one would inherit it? If more than one could inherit it, would it be likely or unlikely that more than half of the children in a family would be effected by depression/bipolar disorder?)

Religious hallucinations would more likely have to do with schizophrenia rather than bipolar disorder. Bipolar can skip a generation and resurface in grandchildren. However it is highly unlikely that half of a family would inherit the condition. Hope this helps. :)

I've read that Bi-polar disorder is not strictly genetic as in how some other illnesses are but more that a person MAY be genetically more pre-disposed to the disorder than those without a family history of it. However, it's also thought that it would be a combination of both genetic and environmental factors that would trigger it in the first place.

By that reasoning I would say it's unlikely that all children of a person who is bi-polar would show symptoms unless there were unusually stressful circumstances in the houshold plus they had also inherited a particular gene.

I'm not an expert, that's just my opinion.

Interesting. I have Bipolar and I am unsure whether it would be right for me to have children one day. I guess I should do a bit more research before I make any firm decision.

Some forms of epilepsy are particularly associated with religious hallucinations.

Bi-polar is mood disorder. DSM IV shows no connection with hallucinations.

I think you have the right idea. Don't have any children. We are overpopulated as it is, so why not leave baby making to other enthusiastic individuals with no health problems. I am relatively certain that I shall attempt to not bear any children, and adopt if I really desire a child. I'm just trying to make a small contribution by not contributing to the population problem. Imagine if others did that too! We would have significantly more resources.

    Is that you, Thomas Malthus?
