God, 'tis awful cold out there today isn't?

Yeah, it's July for feck sake!

We got a good week there at the start of May.

    We did.

Ah sher, we might get an indian summer.......ad nauseum

The weather is ruining my trips to the smoking shelter! As well as having to endure the wind and rain, I have to endure other people talking about it!

dunno....my job involves a lot of smalltalk and the weather (even if its bad) always comes in handy if the wit dries up!!

It's your cue to go: I'll keep you warm. By humping you.... In the face.

God yeah, couldn't agree more. I wish people put more imagination into small talk, I'd rather talk about any nonsense than the same old stuff over and over again. I'm a terrible small talker myself, but at least I try to take the conversation interesting places.
I was cornered into talking about it again today there, and I found myself going "yeah it is nice weather, perfect for an alien invasion." just for the hell of it, to see where it would go, and everyone just stared at me and went back to asking me about my tan... grrr!... I turned away muttering something about anal probes and found myself trying to eavesdrop on the conversation 2 guys were having in Polish, I was that bored.

I used to listen politely to too much small talk, better to get out of there if you can.

I dont know everyone in my company on a conversational basis, so canteen bump-ins can be somewhat uncomforatable without the old-reliable weather chat.

What do you talk about exactly, in this situation?

oh yeah, this weather talk its abit of a downer, first thing someone says to you is about the state of the weather, them complaining! "its terrible..for July" gol it would be worse if we had earthquakes or something!

i usually ask so how is your day going? sometimes! its a better reaction! or im so relieved its the weekend! any plans? bit of a mood lightener!

and then you say 'ah at least it gives us something to talk about' and quickly change subject

    or

if you want to be a bit nasty with it, you can say 'ah at least it gives people like you something to talk about'
they might just look at you a bit odd, but if they ask 'what you mean people like me?' then you get to say 'you know, boring people' and flick your fag butt in their eye and walk off all cool, leaving them crushed and broken.
mwuhh ha ha, mwuhh haah haah ahhhah

The weather is a good icebreaker. Besides the weather has been a staple of smalltalk since time immemorium

Why does everyone need smalltalk? I don't get this. I can have a comfortable silence with someone. A period when nobody says anything but I don't necessarily feel "awkward".

Plenty of smalltalk on this thread. I guess I could go over to philosophy if I wanted bigtalk? Then again, size doesn't matter (or does it!)?

can i just point out that in the last 2 weeks, i've been on like 7 tropical islands? im on koh pha ngan at the moment for the next week, then its off to koh samui for a few days and then i've another 11 months travel ahead of me.

so no, my small talk is still intact. ;)
