Quadrathlon - Any Interest?

    Hi,

HunnyMonster asked in this thread recently if anyone was interested in a Quadrathlon.

For those who haven't heard of this sport, here are a few links :

Like Triathlon, there are multiple distances:

    Quadrathlon|Swim|Kayak|Bike|Run
    Sprint|750 m|4 km|20 km|5 km
    Middle|1.5 km|8 km|40 km|10 km
    Long|5 km|20 km|100 km|21.1 km

    (from the World Quadrathon Federation)

The purpose of this thread is to to start a discussion on the subject, gather expressions of interest, ideas, etc with a view to possibly organising a Quadrathlon for summer 2009.

    • I'm definitely interested in taking part in a Quadrathlon.
    • I'd be in favour of a sprint distance event, mostly because I'm new to Triathlon and I've only done sprint distances. However, if the majority wanted a middle distance I'd still be interested.
    • We'd probably have to organise some kayak lessons, possibly in conjunction with a kayak club.

Jump right in if you've got anything to say on the subject, even if only to register your interest.

    Liam

Liam and I talked about this briefly. I'm definately up for this and I'm happy to organise a race next year (mid to late summer). My preference is always to go long but it might be better to start with a sprint.... luckily I have a live-in kayak instructor!

Id Definitely be interested in something like this - Even more so if it was off -road...

Its seems a bit more balanced than a traditional triathlon.

By that I mean: the kayak element would introduce more upper body work, whereas most of the triathlon is using your legs (although I understand you need a strong core and swimming is an partial exception).

yup.... this would defny float my boat... saw a documentary on RTE a few weeks back on this, it was very off road, looked quality.

Ye are mad to get off road. We have 9 kayaks, 3 bikes, various wetsuits, unknown numbers of trainers, enough protein powder to generate farts that would launch the shuttle and you want me to get more gear......... have a heart!

id actually prefer if it was on road, i was just saying it looked like fun... and that opinion was formed from the comfort of my bed!

It's the swim part that I don't like the idea of.

A solo adventure race is kind of an off-road variation on this, for those interested. And for those who don't like the swimming then the Gael Force West, and Turas Beag (By far and away the better of the 2) are essentially long versions of this sort of thing.

For those who aren't afraid of talking to people, there are also quite a few team adventure races in Ireland which are also very similar :)

I'm still training for my first tri but this sounds pretty cool!

Just did my first tri at the weekend - but i like kayaking and i like the Long distance focus swing from running and cycling in tri to swim and kayak in the quad. And the fact that the cycle is on-road would mean not having to buy another bike ;)

Would we then have to buy a Quad Ass mebership? Just thinking about the licences I have to get already

Just wondering where you'd think of doing the paddling part.

Would it be white water racing, a la the liffey descent or would it be on flat water.

Salmon leap CC to the Garda club Island bridge is about 16Km as far as I know, which would be good, you could throw in a lap of the lake at leixlip if you want to make it longer.

flat water I would imagine, there will be too many novice paddlers to let them loose on anything with bumps. I was thinking down the country.

Thats a pity. The bits with the bumps are the best bits :)

It would also give the experienced paddlers a head start on the super fit.

Could turn into a nightmare with the amount of rescue needed at each weir though.

I would definitely be interested in such an even appearing on the Irish kayaking/triathlon circuit. I'm involved in both scenes separately anyway.

I would however prefer a road based triathlon. The run could be off road though.

There wouldn't be a need for rescue at weirs as the swim and kayak could be run on the same lake or stretch of flat water.

I definitely think the kayak has to be on flat water. If nothing else, we have some control over water levels in lakes and the like. I couldn't believe it when last weeks level 4 proficiency exam had to be cancelled here in Cork because of lack of water. Feels like it's been raining non-stop for months!

Just found this thread. I'd be very interested.

Any updates on this? Are people still planning on organising one?

    This.

I plan on doing a Tri, hopefully sometime in the next year or so and I'm looking into lessons, a quadrathlon sounds great though. We could do a two person relay, I'll happily do the running and kayaking. :D
