    Hi All

I have been lurking on this forum for a while admiring all the fantastic photos and when my point and shoot died I decided to invest and got a good deal on an Olympus E510 and two lenses off ebay.

I only have the camera a couple of weeks and don't understand what half of the settings mean and I have sweet feck all photoshop skills but hopefully that will change over time!

All taken with the E510 Kit Lenses

welcome aboard the crazy DSLR train!
Nice pics, I like #1 the most. With some of the macro (close up) shots you are getting a nice depth of field there..(aperture f-stop numbers etc)...we are all learning here:)

For a beginner, these are great. The shadow from the flash on the dog looks a little harsh but that'll happen. The rest are very nice especially the last one. Great work.

    Welcome aboard the Oly express...:D

Those are a good start, you've caught the light nicely in the crops, with your dog you maybe could get a little more to his level.

If you want a good guide to setting up your new camera, have a look here , in fact his whole site is a fantastic resource for Oly owners.

Very nice. You seem to have an eye for composition.

The dog shot would be the weakest image but still quite pleasing.

The Mono shot of the Wheat Field is really good. Some tweaking to the contrast & it would really jump off the page.

The flower seems slightly under exposed & maybe a bit more saturation.

The last image of the Wheat could be improved by removing the half ear at the base of the frame & whatever is in the lower right corner. This could be by cropping, but preferably by cloning them out.

Very good for a beginner. Are you shooting RAW?

    Thanks for all the replies.

I'll try the three suggestions above over the weekend and se how I get on and re-post the results, probly take me hours, only just started using photoshop!

No I am not shooting raw, maybe when I get a bit more skillful!

Try shooting RAW as it gives you more scope for error. You may have a mode to save as RAW & Jpeg if that makes it more comfortable for you as a start.

Hope you don't mind, but I did a (very quick) edit on the last image.

See if you prefer either of these.

These are great shots. While I am a (relatively new) Canon owner I had an Olympus P & S C2020z for a few years. It had tremendous quality. Nice to see they've carried it into the e510. Well done. B & W field is my favourite of those.

No I dont mind at all..

yeah the camera has a RAW and JPEG mode alright so I may start using that and see how it goes.

I like the crop on the second one.
