Canine cuisine is being sent to the doghouse during next month’s Beijing Olympic Games.

Dog meat has been struck from the menus of officially designated Olympic restaurants and Beijing tourism officials are telling other outlets to discourage consumers from ordering dishes made from dogs, the official Xinhua News Agency reported today.

Waiters and waitresses should “patiently” suggest other options to diners who order dog, it said, quoting city tourism bureau vice-director Xiong Yumei.

Dog, known in Chinese as “xiangrou,” or “fragrant meat”, is eaten by some Chinese for its purported health-giving qualities.

Beijing is not the first Olympic host to slap a ban on eating dog meat.

South Korea banned dog meat during the 1988 Seoul Olympics by invoking a law prohibiting the sale of “foods deemed unsightly”. After the Olympics, the ban was not strictly enforced.

Dog meat is also eaten in some other Asian countries, including Vietnam, the Philippines and Laos.

I think this is pretty ridiculous. I mean if chinese people here started demanding dog meat in restaurants there would be uproar. Same for if muslims complain about christian religious symbols. But are we not just doing the same thing here (by 'we' i mean 'westerners')?

e.g. there's one in Phibsborough AFAIK.


As to them banning it over there it is a bit daft, they could just warn visitors of what it's called and not to order it.

If I go away somewhere as a tourist, I want the real experience.

I lived in Korea for a while. There were quite a few dog restaurants in my neighbourhood. There is some law or something that meant they couldn't advertise dog in english, prob. to avoid offending foreigners. Pretty nice when I tried it. I prefer chicken or beef etc tbh

I'd say you can be pretty sure no "western" countries asked China to stop selling Dog meat. This is purely something that China decided to improve it's image to the outside world. Not that it will make any difference but then all governments can be pretty damn stupid.
Maybe this way they think we won't mind that whole Tibet situation

dog meat's actually been declining in popularity anyway, it started during more famine-y times, and stuck, but now china's doing better as a country demand for puppy sandwiches is dwindling. might also be the rise in popularity of dogs as pets there. a dog is seen as sort of a staus symbol.

I have three dogs and as much as I love them and all dogs I do realise that a pig is as intelligent as a dog so I would be hypocritical to say its icky to eat an intelligent animal like a dog whereas its OK to eat a dopey cow.

So I won't hold the taste for dog meat against the chinese. Its not the fact that they eat it that bugs me, its the fact that they apparently beat the ever loving sh1t out of it while its still alive because the fear hormones and adrenaline make the meat tastier and more tender.

Now I also know that there are some sadistic and careless feckers working in slaughterhouses over here who might not ensure every cow or pig is killed humanely, quickly and painlessly but at least these would be more isolated incidences.

Thanks to all the posters for this very interesting and informative thread...never realised what Dog meat was on the Chineese menu's and fear may have eaten some on recent visit...come to think of it the Restaurant was called "The Jack Lussell" ...never made the connection:eek:

This thread brings back memories, when I was Secondary School I did Home Economics (male here) Classroom full of girls, (me and my friend took Home Ec. so we could hang out with the girls lol!:cool:).

Anyway one day we discussing foods of other Nationalities, and I said how they eat dog meat in China, I was lampasted by the teacher and told it was not true and that I was being Racist!, the one Chinese student girl said they don't eat dog meat at all in China. (Can't blame her) I argued and got detention for a day or two. Government Education FTL.

Do we see Hindu countries boycotting Irish produce or sport because we eat beef or Islamic and Jewish countries because we eat and produce pork and bacon. The Olympics are an international celebration of Sport and Cooperation, boycotting over the Chinese tradition of eating dogs. I don't like dogmat being on the menu but I believe that we have no right to be judgemental and should respect their wishes to eat what they wish. I'd be more concerned if the situation was different were forced to eat dogs from hunger and starvation as happened in Leningrad (St. Petersburg) during World War II.

i would hope 'jewish countries'(wtf is there more than one?)wouldn't boycott us,since israel is a massive producer of pork products.wouldn't be their first hypocritical act though.

I was - it's a waste of money sending a bunch of no-hopers to this year's Olympics. We need an excuse not to go and Chinese eating dog meat is just as good as any protest over Tibet.

Actually it's the Japanese who struggle with L and R (as in their language there is no difference, my Japanese roommate explained to me). But I have heard plenty "flied lice" jokes in my past so it's a common mistake I suppose.

I am Chinese-Irish and don't really think it's that big a deal to poke fun of accents (we (as in the Irish) make fun of the German/French/Italian/British all the time). Humour should be a way of breaking down barriers...

Actually, speaking of accents, reminds of the time when this dope was chatting to myself another guy and a chinese customer. The other guy knew some chinese phrases which impressed the chinese guy and then the dope mouths some vaguely chinese sounding gibberish, thinking he is funny. "Jaysus it sounds like gibberish haha". So I told him to say "Who'd ya nick the car off?". Say it fast and listen to the sound. Sounds like Klingon. I said "Mate, thats what we sound like to him (chinese guy)" Gibberish isn't it!! That shut him up.
