laptop dvd drive into external?

I know this is about a laptop component but I felt this forum is more general and is likely to have more people who know the answer!

I have a couple of working internal DVD drives from old laptops that have gone kapput - I was going to just chuck them but was thinking about it today and figured they might be worth holding onto if I can convert them into external drives (which could connect via USB).

I'm thinking that if I eventually get myself a mini-notebook like the EeePC it would be great to be able to get a disc drive for it at little expense, rather than having to fork out for a new one should I need to run something on the device.

Anyone know of a solution or will they only work internally? I'm thinking if you can do it with a HDD you should be able to do it with a CD/DVD drive.

Jaysus dont chuck em out. Offer em off free on adverts! Laptop Dvd drives break quite often anyway.

Yeah, might do that if I don't get a solution to this... although can't guarentee if they're actually fully operational at this stage as they've been lying around for a while... then again you can't complain if you get it for free!

Will check out Maplin's site - have the peats catalogue (as I just remembered) so might give that a go too.

    Cheers.
