    Could anyone recommend the best budget 300mm AF lens for a Canon 400D/450D. It need not be a Canon brand.

    I can only assume you're not talking about a 300mm prime lens?

    There's the -
    Canon 300mm f/2.8
    Canon 300mm f/4

    Now these are expensive (especially the f/2.8 lens).

    Canon also have a number of zoom lenses, going up to 300mm.

    Check the Canon website for more details on these lenses.

    "budget 300mm"
    Think he means like a sigma 70-300 etc:confused:

    I would'nt call any "L" lenses budget unless he loaded :p

    I think ricky has it there Paul. Budget is the key.
    How much have you to spend John. That will give a better idea of what's in your range.

    does anyone have experience with these and which would be better value?

    Open to other options that I don't know about of course!

    I have the first one mentioned above, the Sigma 70-300mm. The zoom is excellent on it also and if you use it on a Canon 300D-450D you actually get up to 460mm but unless you have good light then the images can be a little soft. Other than that though it's a great starter lens.

    Also, you'll get it cheaper second hand. Check out Adverts.ie or it's also available here

    I don't know anything about the second one.

    I started out with the sigma also. agree with ballymans comments. photos are very soft in darker light. it is a good starter lens for sports and wildlife.

    John check out the following Link.

    They have 2 Sigma lens one with and one with APO.
    With - €195, without - €138 plus delivery

    Sigma say: "SIGMA's APO zoom lenses minimize color aberration. As the refractive index of glass depends on the wavelength of light, color aberration occurs when different colors form images at different points. This problem often occurs with telephoto lenses, but the Special Low-Dispersion (SLD) glass and Extraordinary Low Dispersion (ELD) used in SIGMA's APO lenses helps to compensate for color aberration, thereby allowing them to produce of sharp images."

    Its a coating they put on their lenses to reduce chroma fringing, it does work, but it adds a slight "warmth" to the colour of the lens, personally I don't mind it but some people complain about it.

    That's really helpful guys, thanks! I'm only really getting into it, my dad has a film SLR and I always enjoy playing around with it but he doesn't have great lenses. I was in Africa on Safari a couple of years ago and borrowed a good lens for safari - great fun! That's really what I would be taking photos of, sports and wildlife (I go to alot of sports). Going to buy a digital SLR by the end of the summer when I have saved up enough money - want to do it before the cash back offer ends!

    Does anyone who uses this camera have any sample shots they have taken? That would be amazing. I don't trust the photos they show you on their own websites - probably not even taken with that lens!!!!

    Thanks :)

    What lens did you use on the safari?
    2651437358_f90bf505df.jpg
    That was taken on a canon 90-300 the slighty cheaper version of the canon 75-300 you posted earlier the lens is quiet good and has quick af speed
    More can be seen on my flickr http://www.flickr.com/richardtoolan

    O.o

    Well, seeing as every colour of light has a different wavelength.. which means this happens...all the time? I mean unless you're looking at something which is pure one colour.. :confused:
    Approximate wavelength (in vacuum) and frequency ranges for the various colors

    Color || Wavelength (nm) || Frequency (THz)
    Red || 780 - 622 || 384 - 482
    Orange || 622 - 597 || 482 - 503
    Yellow || 597 - 577 || 503 - 520
    Green || 577 - 492 || 520 - 610
    Blue || 492 - 455 || 610 - 659
    Violet || 455 - 390 || 659 - 769

    If you have the $$$$$ I'd say go for the Canon 70-300 IS USM lens. Much better quality than the sigma 70-300. You wont regret it.

    I wish! Can't afford it at all - have to buy the camera too! Best deal I've found on the 450D is 424 sterling on 7dayshop which will bring me in around 560 plus the lens will be just over 700.

    I'd have to pay important duty though and that would bring it up over the cost of buying it in the UK surely? Plus postage might be very expensive.

    John is this for the camera body only? if so i'd take a serious look at computeruniverse.net as they have the body and 18-55 is lens, which has got some good feedback for, an extra €50 yo yo's.

    €549 body only and €599 including lens. Then other lens is €139 so you will get out for under €700.

    When I met Borderfox a few weeks ago I did relay this very unique thing about Freddie to him in our discussions!
    Although to be fair to Freddie I bought my 450D without ever getting this e-mail from him.:pac:

    Well see I have been offered this lens for free. I presume it would work with the 450D and thus I'd be better just getting the body only. Does anyone know anything about this lens?

    no if i were you take that lense but get the kit with the camera to!that lense really isnt very wide so you'll find alot of shots you try to take you can't fit in the frame.

    I notice there is a thread on image stablisation. Is this a serious issue when photographing with DSLR?
