Anti-virus Question

I have just purchased a new laptop for my elderly parents, they literally only use it for a few sites, booking flights, checking sports results, email etc. other than using those sites they are completely computer illiterate. I have not yet put any antivirus/spyware software on it and I am wondering what would be the best (preferably free) software to use so that it will do checks and updates automatically without my parents having to update themselves. Also I won't be able to install these for about a week, will the computer be safe to use in the interim. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I would say its best not to connect the laptop to the internet until you've installed the virus and firewall software. If the Windows firewall is on (it usually is on a default build) it will be safe'ish. Without virus software a week is plenty of time for something to infect the comp.

I think you'll find your answer here:

    I'd also recommend AVG...

    Download these two :
    http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/browserapp.html
    http://www.vmware.com/products/player/

Its really easy to set up , install the second one and tell it where you put the first one an away it goes.

The first is a virtual pc that will run inside your (parents new) laptop , it will be almost totally independant.
The second is the player to run the virtual pc . If it does get a virus it shouldn't be able to get out of the player and touch the laptop .

Tbh i think an Apple laptop would've been a better idea for them ,but they're a few $$ more.
