Ok so, went to bed 2 nights ago with my P.C in fine working order, but since yesterday i'm having trouble. While i'm no expert at computers im not clueless either.

Got home yesterday and turned the computer on, it showed as connected but i could'nt start MSN/Explorer/Firefox/Bearshare, have my P.C connected to the box with a wireless aerial so removed this and reinserted it a few times thinking it was the problem but to no avail, my sisters laptop though was connecting to the router box as was my PS3 so no problems on that end, spent most of the day retrying it but getting nothing despite the fact its showing as been connected.
Started to think then it was the aerial so made plans to bring the P.C to the box and connect directly, just did that there and again its showing up as connected but none of my programs will work, so that rules out the aerial too.

Any idea's?, anyone see this before?

also the p.c was bought in october '06, but i heard a few times that all electrical products are guaranteed for two years by E.U law, do i have grounds to return my P.C.....??

I've seen it before with service pack installation.
Specifically, the connection was showing as connected, (in Network connections in control panel) to either the WiFI network or the LAN depending on wired or wireless connection.
But when you check your IP address (start>run>ipconfig) I wasnt getting an IP address.
Buddy when you are connected, what is the IP address you are getting?

It is far from a situation where you have to think about returning your PC yet.
Could be a number of ways to fix it.

Thats an address coming from the router so should be a valid one.
Its possible there might be a lease issue.
Have you tried the commands ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew?
This just ensures that you are talking to the router and not holding onto an IP you cant use anymore.
When you see the network connections in control panel, and you look at properties, can you see any packets received?

Did the IP thing and it just gave it the 3 again, not 100% on what i was meant to do about the packets but i looked over that, on the first page it had 4 things it said i used i unticked the one that had the word ''packet'' in it, then when that did'nt do anything i unticked the lot but that did'nt d anything either!!

Hang on now bud! Dont be unticking things!
It seems like you are talking to the router but not to the net.
Have you reset the router a few times and all?

N/B:/ Even though your NAT'ed behind your router, get another firewall installed. Even turn in XP's built in one. (ven more so that your using P2P apps)
Keep an eye on ZoneAlarm's site for an update shortly.

    LEGEND!!!

I deleted the whole Zonealarm but it STILL did'nt do anything, so i started looking for a ''factory restore'' then since i don't have anything important saved but came across one that goes back to a point and that fixed it, that zonealarm update must have still been in my P.C somewhere

I'd have NEVER taught it was something like that and was on the verge of bringing the computer back.

Thanks for ALL the replies, much appreciated!!
