shameless market research - Freebies for LC's

I'm involved in promotion of a couple of degrees in one of the 7 uni's. For open days and the like, we tend to have little things to give away. These are usually pens, mugs, lip balms etc branded with our website. We also get mp3s and bigger things for prized in student competitions. Are pens and the like the most useful or are there other things you would prefer to get at these events?
    Thanks

Pens... if they're nice. Nothing worse than a bad pen. Highlighters are also useful. Hell, refill pads. Anything a LC student is likely to use, so you're safe enough with stationery things. Rulers aren't great, I find. Most people have a ruler and you don't just run out of them. Anyway, normally freebie rulers are a bit crap.

Oh, and here's an idea. When you're making your pens, how about printing the logo so it's the right way up for left handed people, just for ONCE? I mean, it's not that I particularly enjoy having a logo staring me in the face whenever I write, but I'd be genuinely impressed by any company or college etc. that considered left-handed people.

All those 'find out what to do with your life' expos left me with enough pens to last a lifetime. Keep 'em coming. You can never have too many pens.

I'll tell you what not to give out. KEYRINGS. Why would I wear a keyring with 'University of *random British town* on it?

Stationary is the safe bet, because we're always going to need it. Pens and refill pads especially. I imagine that the downside to doing lollipops and stuff would be that they're gone in a matter of minutes, so they don't have the longevity of stationary. But if you were just trying to attract people to your stand at an open day or something, sweets would be good. Some sort of competition is good too.
I haven't seen too many mugs or lip balms by other universities so fair play for those!

Pens are a definite. I was really disappointed when I didn't get any at one of the open days.

Mugs would actually be a nice change and I'd definitely like it. Give things that are useful and will be used.

you've missed rub off tattoos :D

oh yea, also the following items:
    waterguns
    catapults
    trebuchets
    seeds of quick-grow bonsai trees
action figures related to the course

That's a fairly good way of promoting a college course. Alternatively, a Japanese Gameshow-themed adventure in college would also fit in well.
