    Hey

Would like to get everyone's ideas on any great holiday destinations for 2009. I have my holliers planned for rest of this year but am trying to fit in as much as I can afford in 2009.

Any comments or holiday experiences would be appreciated. There are too many places to choose from. :D

Antarctica - expensive but amazing. Beats the rest of the planet hands down.

the lack of even the most basic human amenities for hundreds of miles (apart from the ferry) may bring it down a notch or two i would guess, never been there so i don't know for sure

the american south-west should be high on your list if you haven't been, a few days in vegas followed by the national parks of southern utah and northern arizona like arches, bryce, zion, canyonlands, grand canyon, capitol reef, monument valley or the oasises (sp?) in the desert that are lake mead and lake tahoe

closer to home, western austria is beautiful, innsbruck, zell am see and salzburg are great bases by which to explore that part of the country

the amalfi coast in southern italy is my favourite part of that country, sorrento, bay of naples, isle of capri, pompeii, loads of stuff to do

bergen is a fine city from which to explore the fjords of norway, further north tromso baths in 24 sunlight in the summer and 24 darkness in the winter and is the one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights, about 1 hour flight north of tromso is Longyearbyen on the island of Svalbard well inside the artic circle, here you can visit the worlds most northernly museum, hotel, library, bank, nightclub, bar, supermarket, school, restaurant

Well obviously you can just get off a plane and go to the nearest hotel. Everyone has to go on a cruise ship to get there. I went for 10 days, got to land on Antarctica 3 times a day, saw amazing wildlife esp penguins. The scenary is out of this world - i've never seen a blue quite like the icebergs down there and then when it snows (not often) and everything is untouched and snowhite with the odd speck of black where you can see penguins on the icebergs or seals lounging around. Such a disappointment returning to dock in Argentina and realising i'd to negotiate cars, buildings and towns again! You don't actually stay on the continent but on your ship every night which is very comfortable. I would love to go back but I paid 4000 euros 2 years ago and the same trip now is nearly 7000 because of fuel, increased demand etc. Anyone going from Ireland would also probably match it with a few days in Buenos Aires as well as Ushuaia, the southern most town in the world.
