Just reading on the BBC about the UK's plans to increase car tax for gas guzzlers. While in theory it's a good idea I have to laugh that in order to help poorer people they will be offering grants to scrap old cars to buy new. Now correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't a large part of a cars emissons come from manufacture/delivery/disposal. This is only affecting cars made since 2001 so they aren't that polluting.

But she hinted that drivers could be offered cash to scrap older high-polluting vehicles rather than selling them on - a move supported by Friends of the Earth.

Yep, the new for old argument holds no water regarding cars, esp as the poor tend to travel less anyway.

Politics: Its not important that they actually achieve something good, just that they look like they're trying.

I know it's all politics. I was pointing out how stupid it was to introduce a "Green" tax and in then do something much worst.

Just reading the article again and they've removed the section I quoted, they must have realised that it wasn't very green to scrap perfectly good cars.
