I pay for the UPC service when will they get rid of the people using this device?

The sale of these things should be banned.

It is illegal to sell / use them. The problem is it is quite difficult for UPC to block them. I think they are trying though.

I guess it's UPC's problem (and the rights holders) so it's nothing to get overly worked up about. Being UPC I'm sure it'll take them forever to sort it out.

I did read on another forum that UPC is rolling out a new version of Nagravision (not sure which version) and will support both the current and the new version until everyone has upgraded. I would have thought this requires broadcasting everything twice which doesn't sound ideal. I'm sure we can look forward highly compressed content during this time.

So far UPC's tactic seems to be to spread disinformation to get people to not buy a box because it will fail within a week type of stuff, and perhaps the Nagravision upgrade falls into the same category.

There was discussion about this here recently enough (http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055198597). Judging by that all the new UPC branded boxes (incl. DVR) are capable of Nagravision 2 which has already apparently been cracked (though not all revisions). Everything is cracked eventually, unfortunately...

I don't think they need separate muxes/transport streams for the two different types of encryption. They may be using Nagra 2 here already.

I know in parts of Cork, upc have been around and disconnecting cables going into house where they are not paying for the service. I suppose its the only real way.

I guess most people pay for the basic analogue service and get all the digital stations illegally. That thread that was linked to above does indeed cover the whole thing pretty conclusively.

If UPC used a version of the NDS Encryption, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
The only thing with NDS is you need tons of bandwidth for it to be successful.
As Sky have loads of bandwidth, due to the nature of their network (Satellite), this was never going to be an issue, but on an old cable network you don't have that freedom.

NDS doesn't use all that much more bandwidth than Nagra. It's used in cable networks elsewhere. I'd imagine Murdoch being a big shareholder in NDS might be the reason why only Sky have the rights to use it in UK/ROI.

    the sooner the better!

Apart from the annoying fact that I am paying UPC close to €1,000 a year while others or 'stealing' the service I also have to put up with the disuption the code changes are causing.

Today (Saturday 12th) from before 11am to 1.42 I have had no digital service due to an 'upgrade' and then the STB being unable to find services - rebooting just gave engineering message etc

Youre right Infoanon, the whole digital tv bit of NTL fell over this morning just after 1030am. Problems for anyone who has had their box switched off or has got a reset in Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow. Looks like it will be later today before they manage to roll back to the point before it all fell to bits.

When upc came to the house a few weeks ago they only replaced 1 box with the new one.
Now the new box is working ,but the old(pace) box wont upgrade.

Correction - Gone again - black screen/you have not subscibed from about 2.30 to 3 now completely gone with either MSG12 - upgrading or MSG20 trying to retrieve set up information

Then STB error (1014) which says pull out the plug and on and after doing that you are back to MSG20.............

This may be only happening on the small pace boxes - a user with an older bigger pace box has had no issues

yea i have the small pace box in 1 room ,,wont upgrade.
And the new upc box in the other room ,no problems.

Just wondering why upc only replaced 1 box in the house.

Something funny happened to my DVR earlier today too (around 1 or 2pm, in Limerick) - I tried to pause a programme, it wouldn't let me (pause symbol came up on the screen but it kept playing), then it changed to an "updating firmware" screen or something like that, then turned itself off. Seemed unresponsive for a minute or so but was apparently OK afterwards. Haven't noticed any changes since...

No offense to anyone, it just looked funny with all the "housewives" complaining about loss of signal.

If not a code change then what was the cause of the loss of Digital TV from 10.30 to 5pm on Saturday ?
