Alright past time to start a thread on this one.

Mayo team was named last night:

    1. David Clarke (D. Ó Cléirigh) - Beal an Átha
    2. Keith Higgins (C. Ó hUiginn) - Béal Átha hAmhnais
    3. Kieran Conroy (C. Ó Conraí) - Sruthair-Gleann Coirib
    4. Colm Boyle (C. Ó Baoill) - Na Daibhéidigh
    5. Tom Cunniffe (T. Mac Connuibh) - Caisléan an Bharraigh
    6. David Heaney (D. Ó hÉanaigh) - Béal Átha na Muice
    7. James Nallen (S. Ó Nailín) - Crois Mhaoilíona
    8. Ronan McGarrity (R. MacFheartaigh) - Beal an Átha
    9. Tom Parsons (T. Mac an Phearsúin) - Baile an Chathail
    10. Alan Dillon (A. Diolún) - Baile an Tobair
    11. Pat Harte (P. Ó hAirt) - Beal an Átha
    12. Trevor Mortimer (T. Ó Muireartaigh) - Sruthair-Gleann Coirib
    13. Conor Mortimer (C. Ó Muireartaigh) - Sruthair-Gleann Coirib
    14. Austin O’Malley (A. Ó Máille) - Naomh Uinsionn
    15. Andy Moran (A. Ó Moráin) - Bealach an Doirin

One change as expected Dillon coming back in with a straight swap for Gardiner.

I've a good feeling about this one. Not much between the 2 teams but I think we have a better midfield and we have home advantage as well so should just swing it.

    Agreed,

I don't think Mayo's midfield will allow the Galway midfield to pump enough ball into the Galway forward line to get the win.

Mayo are in a much better state than from the FBD Insurance Cup and the National League whereas Galway seem to be playing the same brand of football.Plus the venue is a big advantage to Mayo.Very few teams can go to McHale Park,Castlebar and get a result.

I think Mayo will win this.

Hmm I should be up for Mayo seeing as I stayed with David Clarke's family and he stayed with mine on Gaelic exchange way back when...but I still have deep scars from being stuck in amongst Mayo fans for the semis in 06' (scalper)

As said above home advantage will be big here. Does anybody else notice that Galway always seem to be tipped as genuine contenders when they haven't really done anything for the last couple of years?

Yeah - it seems that as long as Joyce is there - they seem to be mentioned in the potential honours list. They haven't acheived anyting of note for six/seven years now. The seem to be lacking in key areas of the field - they don't know who to put into midfield so i expect Mayo to come through this one witha bit to spare.!!!!

I think Mayo should sneak this one by 3 or 4 points, The tactic of playing without McDonald seems to have got the forwards working a bit better, hopefully the mortimer partnership will develop a bit more. Also i have a feeling that this could be Mayo's year, it is nothing more than a feeling, but already this years championship has proved to be a bit of a shocker in terms of some results... Wexford, Leinster finalists.... anyway at 16/1 they are certainly worth a few quid.

As a long-suffering Mayo supporter, I hope that the optimists are right, but I have my doubts about our half-back line. Trevor Howley performed well in the league. Is he injured?

There will be nothing in it, but I fancy Galway to get the goal or two that will win it. Mayo haven't scored a goal against Galway in the last 5 championship games though, so they're due one!

I think it will all depend on how Padraic Joyce plays (or is let play, as the case may be). If he is given the freedom to dictate the game as he was against Roscommon, then I believe that Galway will win.

However, I dont think John O'Mahoney will allow this. He could employ an extra defender to "double mark" Joyce, and thus negate his ability to set up scores.

Also, Galway's mid-field are only average and it looks like Parsons and McGarrity have formed a solid partnership at midfield.

It is usually close between the 2 sides, but I think that home advantage might just swing it for Mayo by a point or 2.

Yeah Howley is injured but should be back for the next game. He'll be on the bench on Sunday but I don't expect him to come on. Also most people reckon that since we don't have an out and out FB or two good tight marking corner backs Johnno will just assign our backs to men and tell them to follow them. All of our backs are equally comfortable (or uncomfortable) in the FB or HB line. Basically I don't expect the half backs to play like a regular half back line.

The fact the Johnno went with Dillon rather than Gardiner leads me to believe he will not go with an extra defender. I think we will see Heaney attempt to do a job on PJ like he's done on a few occasions

I'm actually a bit concerned about McGarrity and I feel that he won't be as influential as he used to be.I don't think he's having a great season by his past standards even though his club Ballina Stephenites reached the semi final.

However I think Galways midfield is just above average with Mayo being slightly better and this will be the difference I think. The half forward and full forward line for Mayo looks to be the most solid part of the team.
