House Woes

    Ok, i need help!
Myself and my GF are buying a house together so we got mortgage approved a few months ago. When we got approved the interest rate was about 1% lower than it is now. We found a place anyway and stuck in our bid and it was accepted. All good !!!!, we are very happy with it and cant wait to get in there. However we now have a problem, part of the mortgage approval requires that i have life assurance. I filled in the forms for the life assurance but due to an illness(Not serious) 2 years ago they needed a doctors report. My GF who suffered a similar complaint also needed a doctors report. Her GP filled it out on the day and returned it but my doc has had it for a week and despite daily calls to the office, no-one has called me back about it or returned it to the life assurance company. The problem is that the bank have said that they will only hold our rate until the end of the week and if we dont have it all sorted (this is the only thing holding it up we have signed contracts and everything) then we will lose our rate and the knock on will be that i am not sure if we can then afford the repayments (in the short term, as we are both on a fixed income).

I just feel so frustrated- my GP knows me since i was born and is a friend of the family and in fact used to be in practice with my auntie. With out knowing the inner workings of her office i am presuming that the message is just not getting to her as if it did i am sure she would do it immediatly. I really dont know what to do as its me holding it all up and if it falles through my poor gf will be devastated-

    rant over,
    Help, advise, please..
( my mum has been trying to contact my doc but no joy so far as she only has a home number and hasnt been able to get her..)

Go down and visit the surgery!!

Have to second this approach face to face is the best method of getting these things done.

Jesus man grab a hold of the situation and make it happen! Go to your surgery, tell them what happens if the form isn't filled out by one of the practice doctors today. Don't leave the surgery until that paper is signed. Then hand it into your mortgatge/insurance provider and tell them how urgent it is that it's processed. Don't let it get caught up in the system. If they can't process it in your local office get them to put it in their internal post system and to mark it extremely urgent to be dealt with ASAP.

If the doctors surgery don't look like they are playing ball then tell them that if you lose that mortgage rate you will be suing the practice for the amount of extra money they are costing you every month in mortgage payments. Tell them you have records of the dates you made the requests.

I can't believe you haven't sorted this out already when it's something so important. Kick up a stink!

it really isnt as simple as all of that however i do realise that its too late to rely on an Post
    1) as soon as its completed i will send a courier
    2) i have spoken to the life assurance company ( to the girl who will handle it) and she is primed to deal with it asap

TBH its basically the banks fault- they delayed in requesting the info and as a result it puts everything else under pressure!

As regard kicking up a stink i am in an awkward position in that the doc is an old family friend as i said and i cant really go down there demanding anything. I am sure if my Doc knew the whole story she owuld do it in a second i can only presume the message is not getting to her.

    Hi John,

I'm in a similar situation I need to haver my cheque drawn down by wednesday of next to keep my rate and dublin city council are holding me up with part of the title deeds and I'm in a panic trying to get it. You need to get on top of it now, start bashing heads cause it's the only way you'll get it done, speak to your bank manager see if he can do anything for you. I managed a 3 day extention and am praying I get it done in time to keep my rate.

If you can't get to the surgery, is there someone else that can go down and just wait until they fill it out? Failing that, just keep phoning them until they do.

PS - I know when I was getting my mortgage sorted, a faxed copy of something was enough for them to move something on until the hard copy arrived. Like you I was down to the wire. So you might want to check that possibility out.

I'd make another call to the surgery this afternoon and ask what time they stay open until, letting the secretary know that you will call in if she doesn't sort it fairly pronto. Passive agressive?:o A little but should do the job:D

Defo agree here! Friend of the family or not! IF she is a friend she will understand your urgency and the hassle you are creating! One percent more on your repayments believe it or not is alot of money and you obviously dont care for money that much if you can be as blase about it!

Get this sorted and stop waiting for other people to get their asses into gear! If you want something done in this life u have to do it yourself.

Good luck to you and from someone who knows the value of money i hope to God you dont have to pay that extra percent! What a waste and it is better in your pocket than in the banks!

I do appreciate what your saying but it really isnt as simple as just "hounding them until we get it" i have called everyday since last week! i have confirmed that it has been passed to the GP so hopefully it will get sorted today...

It has been a week and i am sorry if i expect too much from people but that really should have been sent back to you esp since you aired your concerns on how urgent it is.

To be honest Op i am not the one going to be paying the extra money and i wont be losing out but just to sit by for the past week and say - it will be sorted is not good enough! Anything could happen - it may be in the doctors office but she may decide to take a half day and leave it until tomorrow. Dont let chance be the deciding factor here!

Go and save your money! How far is the Doctors office from where you are now??? Shame on you if you say in the same town!

Agree with everyone else. You should just go down to the surgery. The doc is not doing you a favour, they get paid by the insurance company to fill out those forms.

Basically after so many people suggested keeping at them i put all personal issues aside and called the bank - they said the same thing as everyone else! so managed to get confirmation that it would be sorted out today after 3 phone calls from me and 1 from my very angery GF to the surgery. I feel kind of silly for getting so stressed out but am very greatful it is done- Home ownership and huge (but manageable) debt here i come.

Thanks for making me get my finger out!

If a 1% interest rate adjustment is the difference between being able to afford the house or not, I'd think again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

well henry its all relative, it depends on the size of the mortgage and how long its fixed for. having discussed it at length we can probably afford the increase but will have to scale back foreign holidays for a while, which i dont mind because i know what i would rather have a nice house than a week in the sun.
