Hows SP3 for XP coming along?

Just noticed SP3 for XP is out. I'm downloading the File for "It professionals and network admins" from microsoft.com instead of updating through windows update as it'll be handy to have the file if I need to install XP for anyone and don't have a connection to get the latest Service Pack. But I'll also be installing this on my system, I think it's nearly 4/5 times bigger than the file from Windows Update. Does anyone know will it be giving me a lot of unnecessary crap or is it just the same file and you choose what you need or whatever?

Is SP3 going ok now? I heard they had to delay the release, has all that been sorted?

    Any feedback appreciated :)

Its really just all the Windows updates since SP2 bundled in one package with a few other additions. Most likely a lot of these are already installed to your comp through Windows Update, hence the larger size of the full SP3 install.

I installed it on my comp recently and haven't noticed anything different at all...which is a good thing :)

Cool, and what about the biggie I'm downloading? I mean I think the one from Windows Update is 69MB, compared to 316 or so that I'm downloading now. Will the 69MB one need to download further files and the 316 one not, meaning if I'm ever installing XP on a system without an internet connection, the 316 one is the man for the job. Or is it just that it contains loads of networking crapology that I'll never use? :o

The 316MB is "The man for the job" as you put it. You are pretty much correct on assuming that the 69mb installer will download more files as it requires them.

Keep the 316mb with you, undoubtably you will need it!

I have had SP3 installed on my machine for about 2.5 months now, no issues. Its really just full of security update's and code patches. - worth having!

Anyone elses font on FireFox seem to change once they installed SP3:confused:

I also downloaded a new program called Windows Advanced Care 2. My font definitely seems to have changed. Can't tell if it's just on Firefox, or everywhere on the computer. Very small change, or else I'm just going cuckoo!:o

My font has definitely changed alright. I think it's changed everywhere, not just Firefox, when I saw somebody say ****, the difference between the * gave it away :p

The network admin install covers XP machines from SP1 & SP2 so has to patch all in between. I went for the 69mb update myself but the feckin thing went and downloaded close to the 300mb!

Good idea to create a slimstreamed XP SP3 disc now that yuo have it downloaded.

I think I read about the slimstream (or slipstream?) CD before, seemed way too complicated/hassle though :P

So nobody else noticed any changes in fonts? what Could have changed my font I wonder?

Tis dead easy....see www.nliteos.com if you don't fancy the commandline.

    Regarding the fonts, see here.

    Haven't seen this myself *yet*
Try changing the font size from Internet Explorer, View=>Text Size

    Medium is default

Also, would be worth checking the DPI under display Options/Advanced....may have changed?

Sounds like they updated some of the fonts alright. I'm not sure if I prefer the new style or what but just don't want it to be a problem like people on them forums have. I think I have a slightly different problem, nothing I've seen yet has been italicised, I think.

What's the default Font windows uses on the likes of the start menu?

I'm using Firefox, and have checked the view font size option and click reset to the default, which is what it was at, but it's still different.

What's the DPI and where can I get to the options panel of it? :)

XP's default font is Tahoma size 8

Go to control panel - Display - Apperence - Advanced

In the preview, click "Message Text" and see what the font is set to below.

DPI is under control panel - Display - Settings - Advanced

    Default is 100% (96DPI)

All seems what it should be. I use the "windows classic" style on my laptop, perhaps this has something to do with it. Just as long as nothing is "broken" it should be ok :)

Just looking at this now (because I know it's gonna effect me when we roll out SP3), some people have sorted this by getting the SP2 fonts (ariel) from the SP2 cd and replacing them in the fonts folder (In Safe mode).

Seems like a bad oversight on Microsoft's part.

I did a fresh slipstream install as soon as SP3 went gold. ;)

I think if nothing is actually wrong, I'll just wait till MS fix it themselves through windows update or sumthin :P

I used that Windows Care program which cleaned registry files etc so I was hoping that didn't mess anything up, used that straight after installing SP3 so wasn't sure which caused the change.

    Thanks for the help :)

I have a xp pro sp2 disc that I got through MSDNAA. When i slipstreamed sp3 onto the disc, it wouldn't accept my licence key upon installation.

Is an xp key valid for all versions of xp, or just for the sp version it was originally supplied for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,288 ✭✭✭✭Standard Toaster

Don't slipstream it within Vista. That's a known issue....some api in Vista to blame.
You'll have to create the disc from within a XP or Win2003 OS

Valid for all versions. As long as you mean, say XP Pro key used.
I used an install of a SP2 cd for Pro and I have SP3 now without a validation error. If that helps.
