Yes all play fine, i am importing them from my camcorder....

I tried the link and my regedit is exactly as it says, i downloaded te file suggested and it removed all thumbnails views includin hat i did have for my AVI files!!! so i ran regsvr32 shmedia.dll in my run command to restore them but, it didnt help restore the MPG....

If i recall there was a function in tweakUI that rebuild the the icons in windows xp , might be worth trying it, I cant tell you for sure where the
option in tweakui is as im not on a windows pc at the moment

you can download from microsoft here http://download.microsoft.com/download/f/c/a/fca6767b-9ed9-45a6-b352-839afb2a2679/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

    What camcorder have you got?
Just because the files have a *.mpg extension doesn't mean they're actual ISO MPEG1 or 2

They're probably using a MJPEG codec and you probably don't have a directshow MJPEG codec for them....just a VFW one.

Anyway, what model camcorder have you got?

Ok so, it may use AVCHD compression so. So do you have the exact model of the camera? Is it the harddrive one or does it use discs?

If I had a small sample clip I could probably suss this in a sec I think.

Its a sony 2000x diigital zoom handycam, DCR-SR45 and is a HD no discs or tapes.

ok i tried to attach a file but the connection in this hotel is dreadfull... will try later, but maybe what i gave you is enough info....

    thanks

Ok, your camera encodes using MPEG2
are you using XP or Vista?

If your using Vista see here....you can't basicly.

I've never personally got this to work under XP, as have alot of other people.

You could try a couple of mpeg2 codecs and see if you have any joy:
    DScaler
    Stinky's MPEG2 Codec
    FFDShow

I just don't think you'll get it to work tbh
