    Any other sounds? ;)

Me's thinking there is a few sambo guys in Ireland now. Perhaps they could get together and start organising competitions?

I have trained with Alex a few times as well as fought him.
I can say that he is a really good guy, and you can learn a
lot from him. If you get the opertunity take advantage of it.

That Alex is still training with Ray in Portmarnock, he's blue or brown belt now (can't remember which).

AFAIK it was the Georgian Alex from Cork that came second in the U81kg in 2006. Was a cracking fight, Tommy Dennis won it with an armlock in the end.

There is an Irish Sambo Federation alright, there was two Guys at the Worlds last year. There should be a full squad, Sport and Combat, at this years Worlds aswell.

With regard to competitions the nearest will probably be the British or Dutch Open for the next year or two. I'll be chatting the head of the ISF next week, can ask him then.

Pingu can you elaborate on irish sambo? Where are the clubs etc.? Any thing you know and can pass on will be useful.

I'm only really fully up on the Sambo in Galway.

If you're looking for Sambo in Dublin I'd say give Judomad a pm, I think he knows the guys in Dublin, they're somewhere out Rush/Lusk direction.

There is one in Swords in the fitness club IIRC.

They (the club) train up in John O'Tooles 'Image' gym in Swords.

Here's one of the lads, can't remember his name fighting Thomas 'The Tank' Egan in Cage of Truth 2, March '08.

The other lad (the club has two Russian instructors) fought Dave Kelly in the same event.

They're in Image Gym on Saturdays and some weekdays. The lads work the door at Velvet nightclub too so if you want to score with a drunk 17 year old AND get some info on the training you could try there :)

If you went to a sambo class, what would you expect? I mean, in what ways would it differ from a judo class / BJJ class. Not a loaded question at all, the only thing I know about sambo is just what you'd read on wikipedia etc.

exactly what i want to find out

I meant to ask this earlier but is Combat Sambo also part of the course?

Well if you were Korean and you walked into the Institute of Physical Education in Moscow it might go something like this http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/sambo/video/x60m2i_sambo-training-in-moscow_sport :)

Good schedule. Judo and Sambo compliment each other very well so students should be encouraged to develop a base in Judo as well and not just jump into the Sambo classes.

    Hey,
I'm just trying to find this gym on a map but can't find it anywhere. I have the address as "Unit 6 New Sunbeam Business Park Blackpool Cork City" but google map doesn't like any part of that. Is that the actual address?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 661 ✭✭✭Charlie3dan

    Hi P-Rock,

If you find blackpool shopping centre you're in the right area. Across the road there's a retail park with Argos, lifestyle sports, costa coffee and a few other stores. Keep going straight past Argos and take a left. That's the Sunbeam business park.

I work around blackpool and I've been down to have a look at the gym but haven't been in to train yet. Mainly because I finish at half 5 and the thought of hanging around work isn't too thrilling!

I couldnt believe my eyes when I first saw this thread, because I have alway been told not to use the word SAMBO 'for obvious reasons', and indeed once I did use the word meaning sandwich & got myself into a lot of trouble for my ignorance (Brixton South London).

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sambo_(ethnic_slur)

So its now quite amusing to learn that there is a sport actually called Sambo :D

I still cant quite believe it ...................
