Just trying to get in deer hunting and I'm want to get a 30.06,because whose the caliber that my father used wen living and hunting in Africa for the deer sized game, and he always told me that whose the best caliber for the job.
My questing is if it's " to much gun" for the occasional red?

IMO,just right for Red.About the only one that will ensure a one shot kill,if you do your part on the giving end.Trouble is;will you get aliscense for it around here, seeing that the Supers are getting pretty anal these days.:(

    Bit of an over statement:rolleyes:

But yes it is perfect for Red deer and also Fallow and Sika.

Near on any calliber past .223 will do the job given correct placement and bullet choice. The 30 06 will just give you a bit more margin than some of the not so large calibres.find something your comfortable with and go with that:)

I am definitely in the "you can never have too much gun" camp but saying that people were shooting large deer with .22-250 for quite a number of years.

Sorry Guys what i meant with "red" whose Mr Fox:o,i know that 30-06 it's plenty for all deer variants because like I said my father whose putting down
Onix and Eland in a blink of a eye in the old times, with my mom driving the Willys and me with 4 years old in the passenger sit:D.
Probably every body gonna say that it's to much for Mr. Fox, maybe I will try to get a rifle that have interchangeable barrels for different calibers:rolleyes:

Oh I agree and I would never put it forward as the best round for deer.

This is probably a can of worms

Personally if I had choice of caliber I wouldn't use one. Not for safety reasons as all firearms should only ever be used safely. I find it hard to distinguish between a .30-06 round passing through a target into a backstop and .223 round passing through a target and into a backstop.

I just think if you want to shoot deer and fox there are more versatile calibers. Not knocking the .30-06, its a great round but it is a big round.

Mac i believe that you need to have a Irish license or a European gun passport to import from any where, but believe me the prices here are far more affordable than from Portugal, you must have a license from Portugal to buy there then import or have a licensed dealer to import for you, what would bring the prices to the same here or a lot more expensive.
In Portugal the legal caliber for sport shooting is .22 in handguns:( and you need to go true a long process ,like safety and proficiency for example.
For civilian use the legal is 6.35 and you only can get this if you are a person which the profession means to carry values or high profile jobs like bank managers ,etc...
And can take like 2 years or more to have the permit granted,in hunting calibers we don't have any restriction.

Different strokes for different folks, bank managers, high value jobs its who you know not what you know the same the world over, one thing to remember, in the good old days you could have the 4 year old in the front passanger seat of the Car or Jeep and the Garda here would smile, do that sort of thing here now in the year 2008 and the Garda will have you down the station as children are well protected under the law in the Roi just like in portugal.
