Best way to tag MP3s?

It seems some of my MP3s don't show up in iTunes and some of those might show up in the Microsoft Zen software (we have an iPod and Zune), and again some of them show up in the Squeezecenter 7.0 software I use to serve music to my Squeezebox Duet (great device by the way).

So basically it seems that some of my files are tagged right for all programs, some work on a few programs, and others aren't picked up by any software. Not sure why for some of them, some have the artist and track name built into the filename only so I can see that might cause trouble, but can't figure out the rest.

What's the best way to tag my files so they'll all show up on all music programs? Is there a program to automate generation of the tagging? I'd happily pay a few quid for a program if it was to do a good job and save time. Thanks.

    Try Tagscanner or Media Monkey.
    Links here

Check Artist, Album Artist and Album tags are correct.
(It's easy to overlook the Album Artist tag but some players use it).

I use tagscanner or mp3tag but for some reason in tagscanner the tags dont seem to write the files :/

Copied all my music back off an external hdd to the local disk to see if it was permissions but it only happens with a certain few files.

I use this program and find it great - http://www.mp3tag.de/en/index.html
The online search isn't great but the tools in are.
