    Hey.

Any Irish-speakers, or even people with cúpla focal, ever wanted to get their mobile services in Irish? Website, customer services etc?

Would it make texting easier to have predictive text in Irish, or suit you better to have your bill explained to you through Irish?

Would love to hear your thoughts!

It is ridiculous that the O2 website text service (and Voda too I think) does not transmit properly accented characters when both computers and phones can work with these. These companies may not want to support the First National language but they could reasonably be expected to facilitate people who want to use it, or indeed other languages like Polish used by many of their customers.

    Síneadh fada, proszę O2!

There's no market for Irish so unless someone brings in some sort of law this won't happen (don't bring in a law, I'll kick the dail til it breaks). There's more demand for Polski / Chinese etc so this is why you see websites appearing in these languages now.

Would you use Irish yourself or would you use English OP ?

Yes, I already do use Irish whenever the option is given.

I believe there certainly is a market there, but this is something that large companies have been slow to cotton on to, doesn't mean it won't happen soon though!

Windows, for example, offer a version in Irish.

Are you a native speaker or do you use it just because you can and like to be different? (no offence intended)

I've spoken it since I was three, so while I'm not a native speaker, I've never known any different.

Nor would I want to, should I add!

    There's no market for Irish...

Of course there is a market for Irish. Many companies are now using Irish in their marketing, and offering Irish services, as they see the language giving them an edge over competitors. Samsung and Carlsberg are the most high profile to date.

Sorry, didn't mean to just cast it aside. What I ment basically was that anyone who speaks Irish speaks English more (or the very vast majority) and that the very small minority is simply not enough to make it viable. I haven't done huge research (read: any) into it though so I'm happy to stand corrected.

Are you the same person as ardmacha?

No, I'm actually just new to this tonight! Wouldn't be so advanced now as to have two profiles! Haha.

There are many companies offering services in Irish, and many people who specifically look for these services when choosing a network provider, or a bank or whatever it is.
Really it's just about people making it known what they expect from their operator other than just the basic services, which at this stage are just a given.

Right back on topic Folks :) , I'm on the ball tonight i have to say :D

No i'm not the same person as Ardmacha.

It's true to say that anybody today who speaks Irish can also speak English but it's about choice and about how languages are used in competitve markets.

Research from Wales and the Basque Country suggests that speakers of lesser-used languages are more likely to do business with companies that provide services in their language or who use the language in their publicity campaigns etc. Indeed even non-speakers, but people who support those languages, are also more favourable to such companies.

That's the reason why Microsoft, Firefox, Samsung etc. are now tapping into the potential of Irish here in Ireland.

i think it wud be a good idea i like to try put an odd irish word in here and there and havin it on ur phone wud help u do that more so. anyway bring back the irish lanuage i say so when we're on the bus we cud talk it and no one else cud understand us instead of the other way around..

I think you're completely right-anything that makes it easier for Irish users will encourage the use of the language. So, if networks and manufacturers are willing to embrace this, they will harness a market that is just waiting for attention!

Got a Tocco on Tuesday and quite apart from my feeling that it's a bag of cac, I have yet to discover any Irish on it -or is that not a language on offer on those sold in the Occupied Territories?

Interestingly the waiter who served me last night was the son-in-law of the man from Maghera who did the translating.

just to add to that MicrosoftOffice also has an Irish add-on which includes a spellchecker which is kind of cool me thinks :)

New magazine nós* does regular features on different technologies that have Irish language services or versions. Firefox 3 was reviewed this month.

Yeah, Samsung seem to come out with all these extras, which are great, but forget the basics in the meantime! :(
