    Hi All

A friend was looking at a car and the vendor reckoned the clutch was on the way out as the biting point was very high on the car .

Is this a sign the clutch is on the way out?

There seems to be no slippage when car is driving .

What would people advise is the best way to check the condition of a clutch ?

    Thanks

If your taking off or going up a hill and the engine is spinning faster than usual and the acceleration isin't as good, thats a sure sign.
    Your friend is probly right.

    One way is to

    Depress the clutch

With your right foot, put your heel on the brake, with the ball of your foot press the go fast pedal to about 2500rpm, lift the cluch the clutch will bite in and the engine will start to stall if it dont, the clutch is on its way out

Or play it safer and use the handbrake instead :D

Does it matter how fast you lift the clutch ?

How about the biting point should it b in the middle somewhere before it stalls ?

Leave out the clutch straight away.

Apply the handbrake, put it in 4th gear and release the clutch gradually. Depending on how far up the clutch comes, before it 'bites' and causes the car to stall is a rough indication to its healthiness. The less the clutch comes up, the better.

This is best tried while not parked close to anything though...;)

If the biting point is high, it doesn't always mean the clutch is shot. Slipping is a better sign of a bad clutch and can also mean something more serious like oil leaking into the clutch housing.
