Work in recruitment, what it's exactly about

I might be interested in getting a recruitment consultant job but I understand it's mostly sales based as opposed to HR based (my background would be more in HR & I'm comfortable in this aspect) so I'm hesitating is it really sth for me. I've read many threads here & I don't want to revive them but still have questions, would some kind soul provide some answers?

Is there any HR involved or is it pure sales job? Who does the HR?
What does the work flow look like, what does an entry level consultant do?
Is there much of cold calling involved, who do you call - potential employees, companies?
Do you get client accounts so that companies send you their vacancies to fill or do you have to build your client base from scratch?

Any other insight will also be appreciated, I know it may be a rewarding (financially) job but I wonder if it's worth it for me if I'm not a cut-throat salesperson just an efficient & realistic gal.

there are a fair few posts about recruitment (some very recent)

bottom line it is a sales job - pure sales......the commodity you sell are the people going for interviews....you get paid commission if they are employed.

if sales isn't your thing I would steer well clear (particularly in the current economic climate)......just my opinion of course...may be others that disagree!

It has absolutely nothing to do with HR, and there is a large amount of cold calling.

It is a classic sales job (think Glengarry Glen Ross).

Give it a try... worst case scenario you find out it's not for you...

    Ooh tough!

Thanks guys, I think I'll go and do the interview (I have a good chance of getting it as there are some extra requirements I fully meet), we'll see what happens! I's appreciate some more details if anybody has some experience, I'm sure they'll be trying to sell me a sugar coated version at the interview and I'd like to know what the workload can be like to expect decent results.

I used to work in recruitment.

If you put in the work (i.e. a lot of cold calls) you can make decent money. You might be luckly to "inherit" a nice industry from someone who is leaving the company, but if not, it'll take a lot of work before you earn big bucks.

Lots of recuiters earn decent cash though.
