Quick solution (for the lazy;)): Change ZoneAlarm firewall Internet Zone setting to Medium

Yup. Had lots of fun with this last night. Could ping with no problem, tracert was acting up but making some bad connections, and nothing else trafficked. The desktop was fine as it has different firewall. Mucked around with flushing dns, restarting this and that, connecting via lan. It just wasn't making sense so I was thinking of removing the update, but then stepped away for a few mins to demuddle the head and then copped onto firewall and got it quickly sorted.

Trouble is that there's going to be lots of ppl who haven't a clue and won't even be able to check the net for solutions. Oppps

yeah had the same problem today as well. tried system restore first to no avail....then sussed out it was something to do with zonealarm as any time i tried to shut it down it crashed the pc, and i couldn,t get into the settings either, and anytime i did cpu% went up to 100% and stayed there.
uninstalled it and now internet is working fine again. thanks microsoft!!!

According to some support heads in the pub, it's caused problems with other non-ZoneAlarm setups. They've been getting lots of calls on this.

Quite an screw-up on M$'s part, imo.

I have the Look 'n' Stop firewall and the same thing happened to me. Haven't had a chance to follow up on it yet but I had to disable it to get my internet connection working for now.

    Edit: Here's the fix http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?p=1276849

Don't be so quick to blame MS.....this has been in th pipeline for some time now.....only being undisclosed now.
It's not just MS OS's effected.

Security researchers on Tuesday said they had discovered an enormous flaw that could let hackers steer most people using corporate computer networks to malicious websites of their own devising.

For bad news, that's pretty impressive. But there are two pieces of good news: First, no bad guys are known to be using the flaw yet. And second, in a possibly unprecedented display of industry cooperation, virtually every major software company affected is issuing patches to fix the problem.

System administrators will have 30 days to apply those patches -- from the likes of Microsoft Corp., Sun Microsystems Inc., Red Hat Inc. and others -- before the details of the flaw are disclosed at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas.
The flaw has been silently fixed from all vendors or parties involved, before being publicized. If MS didn't patch this, people would still bash them.

I was wondering that. I was using my cousins machine and just went ahead and shut down ZA without giving it much further thought.

Uninstall the update, goto Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs - locate KB951748 and remove it. Then find out which firewall you are using and go to their website they should have a fix or an update for it.

In the Add/Remove Programs dialogue you need to tick the Show Updates box .....

In fairness all its going to is make people aware of the issue, which they'll then go off and fix by getting the latest version of everything.

paleoboy doesn't know which firewall is installed. As bizzylizzy said tick the Show Updates box it should be in the list otherwise you have a different problem.
